A pear cut moissanite on the widest band we make, a flat five millimetre shank with step cut baguettes channel set into each shoulder, recessed below the surface of the metal. This is a substantial ring and it is meant to be.

We make it to order in our workshop in Surat, India. Family run, every ring finished and checked by hand.

Pricing note

Our standard prices are built on a band of up to 2 mm. This band is about 5 mm, so a width surcharge of 150 dollars in silver and 600 dollars in gold is included in the prices you see. That is three millimetre steps at our published rate. The surcharge is real cost, not a markup, because a 5 mm band in 18K gold uses well over twice the metal of a 2 mm one. Nothing is added at checkout, the price you see is the price.

Why a wide band

Most engagement rings are narrow because narrow flatters a slim finger and keeps the stone dominant. A wide band does something else. It gives the ring architecture, it balances a large centre stone, and it looks considered rather than delicate.

It suits some hands much better than others. On a longer finger it looks well proportioned. On a short finger it can visually shorten the finger further, and that is worth knowing before you buy rather than after. If you are unsure, our slimmer designs are the safer choice and we would rather say so.

The channel set baguettes

The baguettes are recessed into a channel cut into each shoulder, so their tops sit level with or just below the surrounding metal. Nothing stands proud. The metal wall on either side takes any knock, and there are no claws to catch.

Being step cut, the baguettes do not sparkle in the way a round accent does. They give long clean flashes, like light off glass, which reads as a bright line running into the head rather than a field of glitter. On a wide flat band that restraint is the point. A wide band covered in pave would look busy.

How this compares with our other channel and baguette rings

Our Channel Baguette pear ring uses the same setting method but on a normal width band, so the channel is the whole ring rather than a detail within a broad surface.

Our Alternating Baguette and Oval ring mixes two cuts, bar set on a slim band, and is much livelier.

This one is defined by the band. If you want the widest, flattest, most substantial pear ring we make, with the stone work kept deliberately quiet, this is it. Nothing else in our pear range is close to this width.

The stone

The centre is a pear cut moissanite, sometimes called a teardrop, held in claws with a dedicated claw over the point. It is a brilliant cut, so it fires hard against the calm of the baguettes.

Every centre stone is Colorless in body colour and VVS in clarity. The baguettes are Colorless and VVS too.

Moissanite has a higher refractive index than diamond, which is why it fires so hard, and at 9.25 on the Mohs scale it stands up to daily wear.

Choose the centre from 2 carat up to 5 carat. On a band this wide we would honestly steer you toward 3 carat or above. At 2 carat the band tends to dominate the stone, which is a legitimate look but not what most people expect from an engagement ring.

Metals

Choose 925 sterling silver, or 10K, 14K or 18K gold in yellow, rose or white. Shown in white gold, where the flat surface reads almost like polished steel. Yellow gold is the strongest choice on a band this broad, because there is a large area of metal and gold has somewhere to show its colour. Rose gold on a 5 mm band is striking. Silver keeps a wide band affordable, and this is the design where the difference between silver and 18K is largest, for the obvious reason. 10K is the hardest and keeps a flat surface crisp. 14K is the everyday balance. 18K is the richest but the softest, and a broad flat surface in 18K will pick up fine surface marks with wear, which many people come to like. White gold is rhodium plated and needs replating every one to two years.

Made to order

Nothing is taken off a shelf. We cast the wide shank, mill the channels, seat each baguette square, then flat file and polish the whole surface for your metal, centre size and finger size after your order arrives. Getting a broad flat band truly flat and truly even is slow work, and it is the part of this ring that takes the longest. That is how we offer twenty one ring sizes and forty combinations.

Care

Warm water, a drop of mild washing up liquid and a soft toothbrush along the channels. Rinse and dry with a soft cloth. A flat polished band shows fingerprints and fine scratches more than a rounded one, and an occasional polish with a jewellery cloth keeps it bright. Take it off for the gym, gardening and swimming pools, and keep it away from bleach.

Questions we are asked

Will a wedding band sit flush? It will sit flush, but honestly, most people wear this ring on its own. At 5 mm it already occupies the space a ring and a band would together, and adding a second band beside it is a lot of metal on one finger.

Can it be resized? Only within a narrow range, and less easily than a thin band because there is so much more metal to work and the channels must stay continuous. Please take the sizing seriously. We will help you get it right first time.

Does a wide band feel uncomfortable? We round and polish the inner edges so it does not bite. It feels different from a thin ring rather than worse, and most people adjust within a week. If you have arthritic or enlarged knuckles, a wide band is harder to pass over the knuckle, and that is worth thinking about.

Is the point of the pear protected? Yes, it has its own claw.
