Wear & care guide

Ring & jewellery care.

Your Mapple Gems pieces are made by hand to last a lifetime — but they still ask for a little care. Here's how to keep your jewellery as brilliant as the day it arrived.

A short read · 5 minutes

Why it matters

Care is the everyday part of love

A common misconception is that lab-grown diamonds and moissanite are indestructible. The stones are remarkably hard — but the metal that holds them (the band, the prongs, the gallery) is softer and far more vulnerable. Most damage we see at the atelier is to the setting, not the stone.

A few small habits below will keep your ring beautiful for decades.

01

Start with the right fit

A ring that's even slightly too loose will rock, spin, and knock against hard surfaces — slowly bending prongs and wearing down the band. Too tight and metal stress builds.

If your ring moves more than a quarter-turn on its own, or feels uncomfortable, please email us at mapplegems@gmail.com — we offer complimentary first resizing within the first year.

02

When to take it off

The simplest, biggest favour you can do for your ring is to remove it for a few specific moments each day:

  • Showering, swimming, and saunas (chlorine and salt water dull and corrode metal)
  • Applying lotion, perfume, sunscreen, or hairspray
  • Washing dishes or cleaning with harsh chemicals
  • Gardening, DIY, weightlifting, or any hands-on activity
  • Sleeping — sheets and hair catch on prongs and slowly loosen them
03

Where to keep it

Store every piece separately in the soft pouch or ring box it arrived in. Jewellery is soft enough to scratch itself — diamonds are particularly good at scratching gold.

Keep a small dish or pouch by the sink, on your nightstand, and at the gym so your ring has a safe home whenever you take it off.

If you travel often, a small zip pouch in your day-bag will save countless hotel-room scares.

04

A note on hand-finished pieces

Every Mapple Gems piece is set, polished, and finished by hand in our Surat atelier. That means each ring is a one-of-one — and the thinner the band or more delicate the setting (hidden halos, vine settings, bezel set), the more thoughtful your daily wear should be.

05

How to clean it at home

The simplest cleaning method is the best one. Once a week:

  • Fill a small bowl with warm (not hot) water and a few drops of mild dish soap
  • Soak your ring for 10–15 minutes
  • Gently brush around and under the stone with a soft baby toothbrush — paying extra attention to the underside of the setting where light enters
  • Rinse in clean water and pat dry with a lint-free cloth
  • Let it air-dry fully before wearing again

That's it — no commercial jewellery cleaner needed for everyday maintenance.

06

Steam, ultrasonic & at-home gadgets

Pressurised steam and ultrasonic cleaners are fine for solid metal jewellery, but they can finish the job of loosening a prong that was already slightly compromised. If you suspect any setting damage, please don't put it through an ultrasonic — bring it to us first.

07

Why your stone loses its sparkle

Lab-grown diamonds and moissanite both attract a thin layer of skin oils, soap film, and lotion residue. After a few weeks of wear, this film coats the underside of the stone — where most of a stone's brilliance is born — and your ring quietly dims.

This is the single biggest reason a ring 'isn't as sparkly as it used to be.' A 10-minute soap soak (above) brings it almost entirely back.

08

Annual atelier check-in

Once a year, we recommend a professional inspection and deep clean. We'll check prongs, tighten anything that's worked loose, re-polish the band, and steam-clean the stone back to brand-new brilliance.

This service is complimentary for life on all Mapple Gems pieces — just cover insured shipping both ways. Email mapplegems@gmail.com to arrange yours.

09

If something feels off

If you hear any rattle, see a prong lift, or feel a sharp edge that wasn't there before — please stop wearing the piece and contact us right away. We can almost always repair small issues before they become losses.

The number-one cause of a lost stone is a loose prong worn for too long.

Lifetime warranty covers manufacturing defects. Repair service for normal wear is available at modest cost.
