Pear Cut Moissanite Rope Twist Band Engagement Ring in Sterling Silver, 10K, 14K and 18K Gold

A pear cut moissanite in six ball tipped claws on a solid rope band. The whole shank is worked into a continuous spiral, like a length of twisted cord, running unbroken from one shoulder round the finger to the other. There are no accent stones anywhere on the ring. Everything except the centre stone is metal.

The rope

A rope band is one of the oldest decorative forms in goldsmithing and it survives because it does something no smooth band can. The spiral gives the metal a continuous run of highlight and shadow, so the ring catches light all the way round rather than presenting one flat reflective surface.

Getting it right is a matter of consistency. The pitch of the twist has to stay even as the band curves, and each groove has to be cut and polished to the same depth, or the spiral reads as wobbly. On a finished rope band you should be able to follow one groove with your eye all the way round without it wandering. That is what we check before a ring leaves the bench.

The other advantage is practical. A textured band does not show fine scratches the way a polished flat one does, so a rope ring looks new for far longer with no more care than an occasional clean.

Pricing note

The rope band measures about 2.5 to 3 mm across, wider than the 2 mm our standard pricing covers, so this design carries a band width surcharge of 50 US dollars in sterling silver and 200 US dollars in gold. That is already included in the prices shown, and it reflects the extra metal in the band.

This one is the only pear ring we make where the rope is a single solid worked form with no stones in it at all. It is the most affordable of the three by a wide margin, it is the easiest to look after, and it is the one to choose if you like the twisted look but want the ring to be about goldsmithing rather than about pave.

The stone

The centre is a pear cut moissanite, sometimes called a teardrop. It is a brilliant cut, so it returns light as sharp flashes of white and coloured fire, and its point elongates the finger. With no accents anywhere, the size and quality of this stone is what the ring is.

Every centre we set is Colorless in body colour and VVS in clarity. Moissanite has a higher refractive index than diamond, which is why it fires so hard, and at 9.25 on the Mohs scale it holds up to being worn every day.

Choose from 2 carat up to 5 carat. A substantial band like this carries the larger sizes comfortably, and at 2 carat it makes the stone look larger by giving it a solid base to sit on.

Metals

Choose 925 sterling silver, or 10K, 14K or 18K gold in yellow, rose or white. Shown in yellow gold, and honestly this is a design that wants warm metal, because the entire point of it is light travelling along worked gold. 18K yellow is the richest. Rose gold is softer and slightly antique. In white metal the rope reads as a bright twisted line, cleaner but less obviously handmade. Silver takes the texture very well. 10K is the hardest gold and holds a crisp twist best against wear. White gold is rhodium plated and needs replating every one to two years.

Made to order

Nothing is taken off a shelf. We cast, cut, twist, file and polish each ring for your chosen metal, centre size and finger size after your order arrives, which is how we can offer twenty one ring sizes and forty combinations.

Care

Very easy. Warm water, a drop of mild washing up liquid and a soft brush worked along the grooves of the rope, which is the only place anything collects. Rinse and dry with a soft cloth. There is no pave to clog and no openwork to clear. Take it off for the gym, gardening and swimming pools, and keep it away from bleach.

Questions we are asked

Will a wedding band sit flush? Not perfectly. A rope band has a ridged outline, so a flat band touches only at the high points. A matching rope band solves it beautifully, and a plain band still sits comfortably, just not seamlessly.

Can it be resized? Yes, within a reasonable range. There are no stones in the shank. A large resize can interrupt the rhythm of the twist though, so try to get the size right.

Is it comfortable with a textured band? Yes. The inside of the shank is smooth. Only the outside is worked.

Does the rope wear flat? Very slowly, and mostly underneath. In 10K or 14K it will still be crisp decades from now.

Is the point of the pear protected? Yes, it has its own claw.
