Pear Cut Moissanite Milgrain Twisted Pave Engagement Ring in Sterling Silver, 10K, 14K and 18K Gold

A pear cut moissanite in six ball tipped claws on a shank where a polished strand and a pave set strand twist past one another, with every pave section outlined in fine milgrain beading so the set panels read as leaf shapes rather than as a plain strip of stones.

What the milgrain does here

Milgrain is a row of tiny raised beads worked along an edge with a knurling wheel. On this ring it borders each pave panel on both sides, and that border is what makes the design distinct from a plain twisted pave band.

Without the beading, a twisted pave shank reads as a ribbon of light that happens to curve. With it, each pave section becomes a defined shape with an outline, and because the panels taper to points where the strands cross, they read as leaves lying along a stem. The stones stay the same. The border changes what your eye makes of them.

It also adds an antique quality that a modern twist does not have on its own. Milgrain belongs to Edwardian and early Art Deco work, so putting it on a contemporary twisted shank gives you a ring that sits between the two, which is exactly the point of the design.

The stones

The centre is a pear cut moissanite, sometimes called a teardrop. It is a brilliant cut, so it returns light as sharp flashes of white and coloured fire, and its point elongates the finger.

The accents are round moissanite set in graduated sizes along each panel, larger toward the centre and smaller toward the ends, which is what gives the panels their tapered shape. Every stone in the ring is Colorless in body colour and VVS in clarity, matched before setting.

Moissanite has a higher refractive index than diamond, which is why it fires so hard, and at 9.25 on the Mohs scale it holds up to daily wear.

Choose the centre from 2 carat up to 5 carat, with the panels scaled to hold their proportion.

Metals

Choose 925 sterling silver, or 10K, 14K or 18K gold in yellow, rose or white. Shown in yellow gold, which is the right metal for milgrain because beading is read through shadow and warm metal holds shadow best. In white gold or silver the beads are present but much quieter and the ring reads as more modern. Rose gold gives the most Victorian feeling of the three. 10K is the hardest gold and keeps beading crisp longest, 14K is the everyday balance, 18K has the richest colour. White gold is rhodium plated and needs replating every one to two years.

Made to order

Nothing is taken off a shelf. We cast, set the pave, apply the milgrain by hand, file and polish each ring for your chosen metal, centre size and finger size after your order arrives, which is how we can offer twenty one ring sizes and forty combinations.

Care

Warm water, a drop of mild washing up liquid and a soft toothbrush, worked along the beading and into the groove where the two strands cross. Milgrain that has filled with polish residue and skin oil reads as a smooth line instead of a row of beads, so this ring rewards a proper brush rather than a wipe. Rinse and dry with a soft cloth. Take it off for the gym, gardening and swimming pools, and keep it away from bleach.

Questions we are asked

Will a wedding band sit flush? Not fully. The twist gives the shank a wavy outline, so a straight band meets it only where the strands cross. A contoured band works better, and this design also looks well worn on its own.

Can it be resized? Within a narrow range. The set panels and the milgrain both limit how far the shank can be worked without interrupting the pattern.

Will the milgrain wear away? Slowly, and mostly on the underside where the ring meets your palm. The beading you actually see, on the shoulders and top, stays crisp for decades.

Do the small stones fall out? Properly set pave does not, but have the settings checked every couple of years as with any pave ring.

Is the point of the pear protected? Yes, it has its own claw.
