Pear Cut Moissanite Hand Engraved Scroll Three Stone Engagement Ring in Sterling Silver, 10K, 14K and 18K Gold

The engraving is the ring

Most decorated bands use stones. This one uses cut metal. A graver is worked across the surface to lift curling scroll and leaf forms, and because those cuts are deep they hold shadow, which is what makes the pattern legible from across a table rather than only at arm's length.

The scroll does not stop at the shoulders. It carries round the outer sides of the shank, so from a side view the whole band is worked. That is unusual and it is deliberate, because a pear ring is looked at from the side more than most, the stone being long and asymmetric.

This is the most labour intensive decoration we do. It is also the least fragile, in the sense that engraving cannot fall out.

Graduated sides, not a matched pair

Each shoulder carries two round accents rather than one, and they step down in size as they move away from the centre. That graduation does something specific to a pear. The pear itself tapers from a broad curve to a point, and stones that reduce in size alongside it repeat that taper instead of contradicting it. A single large side stone on each side would read as a three stone ring. Two stepping down reads as a stone that is being carried by the band.

How this compares with our other engraved pear rings

Our Hand Engraved Knife Edge ring has wheat scroll engraving on both slopes of a ridged band with milgrain, and no accent stones at all. Sharper, more architectural, entirely about the metal.

This ring is the fullest scroll pattern we make and the only engraved pear ring with graduated round accents. If you want obvious antique decoration and stones on the shoulders, this is the one.

The stones

The centre is a pear cut moissanite, sometimes called a teardrop. It is a brilliant cut, so it returns light as sharp flashes of white and coloured fire, and its point elongates the finger.

The four side accents are round moissanite in two sizes. Every stone in the ring is Colorless in body colour and VVS in clarity, matched before setting.

Moissanite has a higher refractive index than diamond, which is why it fires so hard, and at 9.25 on the Mohs scale it holds up to daily wear.

Choose the centre from 2 carat up to 5 carat, with the accents and the scale of the engraving adjusted to keep the ring in proportion.

Metals

Choose 925 sterling silver, or 10K, 14K or 18K gold in yellow, rose or white. Shown in yellow gold, which we would recommend without hesitation for this design. Engraving is read through shadow, and warm metal holds shadow far better than white. In white gold or silver the scroll is present but much quieter, closer to a platinum period piece. Rose gold gives a warm Victorian feeling. 10K is the hardest gold and keeps engraved edges crisp longest, 14K is the everyday balance, 18K takes engraving beautifully because it is softer under the graver but will also soften faster with wear. White gold is rhodium plated and needs replating every one to two years.

Made to order

Nothing is taken off a shelf. We cast, engrave by hand, set the stones, file and polish each ring for your chosen metal, centre size and finger size after your order arrives, which is how we can offer twenty one ring sizes and forty combinations. The engraving stage alone takes several hours per ring.

Care

Engraving needs cleaning more than plain metal, because the cuts collect polish residue, hand cream and skin oil and a filled scroll reads as a flat surface. Warm water, a drop of mild washing up liquid and a soft toothbrush worked along the pattern, not across it. Rinse and dry with a soft cloth. Take it off for the gym, gardening and swimming pools, and keep it away from bleach.

Questions we are asked

Will a wedding band sit flush? Reasonably, though the engraved band is wider than our plain designs, so a matched wider band looks more balanced beside it than a very thin one.

Can it be resized? Only within a narrow range, and this is the honest limit of the design. Cutting the shank interrupts a continuous engraved pattern, and rejoining it means re engraving across the join. Please get the size right, and write to us if you are unsure.

Will the engraving wear away? The underside will soften over decades of wear, which is normal and part of how an engraved ring ages. The shoulders and top, which is what you see, stay sharp far longer. It can be re cut by a hand engraver if it ever needs it.

Is the point of the pear protected? Yes, it has its own claw.
