Step 1
Design & Selection
We finalise your design and hand-pick the certified center stone.
Save 20%A pear cut moissanite held in six long tapered claws above a knife edge band that has been engraved by hand on both of its sloping faces. There are no accent stones anywhere on this ring. Everything you see besides the centre stone is cut into the metal itself.
We make it to order in our workshop in Surat, India. The engraving is done with a graver at the bench, so no two rings are identical down to the last line, and that is the point of buying an engraved ring rather than a cast one.
Most bands are round or flat across the top. A knife edge band is peaked, so it rises to a ridge running down the centre of the shank and slopes away on both sides. That ridge catches light in a single bright line all the way round the finger, which is why knife edge rings look brighter than their metal weight suggests.
On this ring the peak also gives the engraver two separate faces to work on. The pattern is a flowing wheat and feather scroll, cut into both slopes, with a row of milgrain beading along the centre ridge and another along each outer edge. That is three lines of beading on a band under 2 mm wide, which is a large part of why this piece takes longer at the bench than a plain solitaire.
The engraving runs from the head down around roughly three quarters of the shank and then stops with a clean finished end. The remaining section against the palm is left polished, because engraving that sits under the finger wears flat within a few years and we would rather not sell you detail that will not last.
We list two other hand engraved pear rings with no accent stones, and the difference between all three is in the band shape and the pattern, so it is worth being specific.
The Baroque Scroll Milgrain ring has a rounded shoulder with a single deep flourish that stops partway down. The Continuous Engraved Scroll ring has a flat faced band with one repeating scroll and milgrain on the two outer edges only.
This one is the peaked band. It is the only one of the three with a centre ridge, the only one with three rows of milgrain, and its pattern is finer and denser than either of the others. Look at the side photographs and the peak is obvious immediately.
The six claws are long and tapered to fine points rather than the rounded beads used on most solitaires. They hold the stone with visibly less metal, so more of the pear is exposed from above, and their shape suits the antique character of the engraving. The point of the pear has a claw of its own, which matters because the point is the part of the shape most likely to catch.
Pear cut moissanite, sometimes called a teardrop. It is a brilliant cut, so it returns light as sharp flashes of white and coloured fire rather than the broad mirror flashes of a step cut. On a ring with no accent stones the centre has nothing to compete with, so the size and quality of the stone is doing all the work.
Every centre stone we set is Colorless in body colour and VVS in clarity. Moissanite has a higher refractive index than diamond, which is why it fires so hard, and at 9.25 on the Mohs scale it is second only to diamond among stones you would wear every day.
Choose the centre from 2 carat up to 5 carat. On an engraved band the larger sizes work particularly well, because the pattern gives the eye somewhere to go and stops a big stone from looking bare on the hand.
Choose 925 sterling silver, or 10K, 14K or 18K gold in yellow, rose or white. Engraving reads best in yellow and rose gold, where the cut lines catch shadow against the warm metal, which is why we photograph this one in yellow. It looks handsome in white too, though a little more subtle. Silver takes engraving very well and is the most affordable way to own hand cut work. 10K is the hardest gold, 14K the everyday balance, 18K the richest in colour and the softest. White gold is rhodium plated and needs replating every one to two years.
Nothing here is taken off a shelf. We cast, engrave, set and polish each ring for your chosen metal, centre size and finger size after you order, which is how we can offer twenty one ring sizes and forty combinations.
Warm water, a drop of mild washing up liquid and a soft toothbrush. Engraved lines and milgrain beading trap polish residue and skin oil, and a clogged engraving looks flat rather than crisp, so work the brush gently along the pattern. Rinse and dry with a soft cloth. Take the ring off for the gym, gardening and swimming pools, and keep it away from bleach.
Will the engraving wear away? Slowly, over many years, and mostly on the underside where your finger rubs. That is exactly why we stop the pattern before it reaches the palm. The engraving on the top and shoulders will still be crisp decades from now if you look after it.
Can a wedding band sit flush? Not perfectly. A knife edge peak means a flat band touches only along the ridge. A band with a matching knife edge or a slight V will sit far better, and many people wear this design alone.
Can it be resized? Yes, within a size or two, because there are no stones in the shank. Beyond that the engraving pattern gets stretched or compressed, so please try to order the right size.
Is the engraving cut or cast? Cut. A graver is used on the finished band at the bench, which is why the lines have bright cut walls that catch light. Cast pattern looks soft by comparison.
Does it come without milgrain? The beading is part of this design. If you want engraving without beading, look at our other engraved pear rings.
