Pear Cut Moissanite French Pave Engagement Ring in Sterling Silver, 10K, 14K and 18K Gold

A pear cut moissanite in six claws on a low profile band set with French pave, a row of round accents held in seats that are cut away underneath into a V, so light reaches each stone from below as well as from above. The pave runs about two thirds of the way round the shank before giving way to plain polished metal, and the basket under the centre is left bare.

What French pave means

The name refers to how the seat under each stone is cut. In ordinary pave the stone sits in a round hole. In French pave the metal beneath is cut away into a V shape, so from the side you see small triangular openings between the stones rather than a solid wall.

Two things follow. Light gets underneath each accent, so they stay lively instead of going dark against the metal. And the band looks lighter, because those little openings break up what would otherwise be a solid band of gold.

It is slower to cut than plain pave and it is the reason this design costs a little more than a basic set band. It is also the reason the accents keep working in low light, which is where most rings are actually seen.

This ring has the longest pave run of the three, going roughly two thirds of the way round, sits on a low straight shoulder rather than a raised cathedral, and has the French cut seats. If the band in the photograph looks like it carries more stones than our others, that is because it does.

The stones

The centre is a pear cut moissanite, sometimes called a teardrop. It is a brilliant cut, so it returns light as sharp flashes of white and coloured fire, and its point elongates the finger.

The accents are round brilliant moissanite. Every stone in the ring is Colorless in body colour and VVS in clarity, matched to the centre before setting.

Moissanite has a higher refractive index than diamond, which is why it fires so hard, and at 9.25 on the Mohs scale it holds up to daily wear.

Choose the centre from 2 carat up to 5 carat, with the accent row scaled to suit.

The setting and band

Six claws hold the pear with a dedicated claw over the point, and the basket underneath is a plain open cathedral with no hidden halo. The shoulders sit low rather than rising, which keeps the ring comfortable and easy to wear next to other rings.

The last third of the shank is plain, which is what allows the ring to be resized within a reasonable range and keeps the stones away from the part of the band that takes the most wear.

Metals

Choose 925 sterling silver, or 10K, 14K or 18K gold in yellow, rose or white. Shown in yellow gold, where the warm beading between the accents and the V cuts underneath are both clearly visible. In white metal the row reads as a continuous line of light. Silver gives that same effect for much less. 10K is the hardest gold, 14K the everyday balance, 18K the richest in colour and softest. White gold is rhodium plated and needs replating every one to two years.

Care

Warm water, a drop of mild washing up liquid and a soft toothbrush, brushed along the row from both above and below. The V cuts underneath the stones are what make this setting bright, and they are also where dirt collects, so a brush from underneath matters more here than on a plain pave band. Rinse and dry with a soft cloth. Take it off for the gym, gardening and swimming pools, and keep it away from bleach.

Questions we are asked

Will a wedding band sit flush? Yes, well. The shoulders are low and the shank is plain at the bottom, so a flat band sits close.

Can it be resized? Within a reasonable range, because the last third of the shank carries no stones. Less freely than a plain band, more freely than a fully set one.

Are French cut seats less secure? No. The beads holding each stone are unchanged, only the metal underneath is removed. It is a standard technique and it has been used for a century.

Does it sparkle more than a plain pave band? In dim light, noticeably, because light can reach the stones from below. In bright light the difference is smaller.

Is the point of the pear protected? Yes, it has its own claw.
