A pear cut moissanite in six claws with a Celtic trinity knot worked into the metal at each shoulder, the band beyond them plaited into an interwoven rope that carries the pattern round the finger. There are no accent stones anywhere on this ring.

We make it to order in our workshop in Surat, India. Family run, every ring finished and checked by hand.

The trinity knot

The knot at each shoulder is a triquetra, three interlaced loops drawn from a single unbroken line. It is one of the oldest decorative motifs in Northern European metalwork and it appears in Irish and Scottish manuscript and stone carving long before it was used in jewellery.

People read it in different ways, and we do not think it is our place to tell you which reading is right. Some take the three loops as past, present and future. Some take them as a religious symbol. Many people simply like that it has no beginning and no end, and that a continuous line is a reasonable thing to put on an engagement ring.

Either way, it is metalwork rather than sparkle. The knot is pierced so daylight passes through the loops, and it is the shadow inside those openings that makes the interlacing legible.

How this compares with our other Celtic pear ring

Our Celtic Knot Pave ring uses interwoven pierced loops with micropave set along them and a round accent at the centre of each knot. It sparkles, and the knot reads as a bright pattern.

This ring has no stones on the band at all. The knot is pure polished metal, and so is the plaited shank beyond it.

That makes it the quieter and more traditional of the two, and considerably the more robust. Nothing on the band can loosen, there is no pave to clean, and the pattern will look the same in thirty years as it does now. If you want the Celtic motif itself rather than a sparkling interpretation of it, this is the one.

The plaited shank

Beyond each knot the band continues as an interwoven plait rather than returning to a plain round wire. That matters, because a knot sitting on a plain band looks applied, like a decoration stuck on. Carrying the weave outward makes the knots read as places where an already woven band gathers tighter, which is how the motif works in the historic pieces it comes from.

The stone

The centre is a pear cut moissanite, sometimes called a teardrop. It is a brilliant cut, so it returns light as sharp flashes of white and coloured fire, and its point elongates the finger. With no accent stones anywhere, the pear carries the whole ring.

Every centre stone is Colorless in body colour and VVS in clarity.

Moissanite has a higher refractive index than diamond, which is why it fires so hard, and at 9.25 on the Mohs scale it holds up to daily wear.

Choose the centre from 2 carat up to 5 carat. Because the band is all metal, a larger centre balances it well, and we would take the larger of two sizes if you are undecided.

Metals

Choose 925 sterling silver, or 10K, 14K or 18K gold in yellow, rose or white. Shown in white gold, which reads closest to the silver and pewter of the historic originals and lets the interlacing show as a play of bright and shadowed metal. Yellow gold makes the knot warmer and considerably more legible, because the shadow inside the loops is deeper. Rose gold is unusual and rather lovely on this motif. Silver is both the most affordable route and arguably the most authentic. 10K is the hardest and keeps the knot crisp, 14K is the everyday balance, 18K is the richest but softest. White gold is rhodium plated and needs replating every one to two years.

Made to order

Nothing is taken off a shelf. We cast, pierce and finish the knots, work the plait, set the stone, file and polish each ring for your chosen metal, centre size and finger size after your order arrives, which is how we can offer twenty one ring sizes and forty combinations. Polishing interlaced metal takes much longer than polishing a plain band, because every loop has to be reached separately.

Care

Warm water, a drop of mild washing up liquid and a soft toothbrush, worked through the openings of the knots from both sides. There are no stones to worry about, but a knot filled with hand cream loses its shadow and stops reading as interlaced, so the brush matters here. Rinse and dry with a soft cloth. Take it off for the gym, gardening and swimming pools, and keep it away from bleach.

Questions we are asked

Will a wedding band sit flush? Reasonably well below the knots, because the plait keeps a fairly even outline, though it is not a perfectly flat surface. A contoured band fits best. Many people wear this one alone since the band is already the feature.

Can it be resized? Within a moderate range. There are no stones in the shank, which helps, but the plait pattern must stay continuous across any join, so we would rather get the size right first time.

Is the pierced knot strong? Yes. The loops are broad and curved rather than fine, which is much stronger than delicate filigree. This is one of the more robust decorative rings we make.

Is the point of the pear protected? Yes, it has its own claw.
