Moissanite Oval vs Cushion Cut: Size, Sparkle and Style
One shape stretches along the finger, the other sits soft and square โ and the cushion hides a choice most sellers never mention.

Short answer
Choose an oval moissanite for more visible size and a longer-looking finger: about 7.5 ร 5.5 mm at 1 ct DEW against a square cushion's 6.0 mm. Choose a cushion moissanite for a softer, vintage look and an easier straight wedding band. A crushed-ice cushion out-sparkles an oval; a chunky cushion is calmer โ so ask which you're getting.
Oval and cushion are both brilliant cuts, so both sparkle. The differences are in outline, size per carat, and one variable that belongs to the cushion alone. An oval is a stretched round: long, smooth, no corners. A cushion is a square or slightly rectangular stone with softly rounded corners, like a pillow โ hence the name.

Size: the oval wins on face-up area
At the same diamond-equivalent weight, an oval covers noticeably more of the finger than a square cushion. A cushion carries more of its weight in depth, which is part of what gives it that full, pillowy look โ but it means a 2 ct cushion reads closer to a 1.5 ct oval from above. If visible size is the priority, the oval is the stronger choice.
An elongated cushion, at a ratio of about 1.15โ1.30, closes some of that gap and adds a little length. It is a good middle ground for someone who likes the cushion's soft corners but wants a longer look.
Sparkle: the cushion has two personalities
An oval's sparkle is fairly predictable: lively, colourful, with a bow-tie that should break up as the ring moves. A cushion's depends on how it was faceted, and no listing or grading report has a field for it.
Crushed ice cushions have many small facets under the table. They produce a glittering, shattered-glass shimmer and, in moissanite, sit alongside the round at the very top of the fire ranking. Chunky or antique-style cushions have fewer, larger facets. They show bigger, slower flashes, a more vintage character, and noticeably less rainbow. Because nothing on a listing names the faceting style, cushion is the shape where buyers are most often surprised. Someone who wanted a soft, vintage glow receives a crushed-ice stone throwing colour across the room; someone who wanted maximum sparkle receives a calm chunky one. Neither stone is wrong โ it is simply the other cushion.
The fix is one question before ordering: "Is this crushed ice or chunky?" Ask for a video under ordinary room light, too. A crushed-ice cushion shows a fine, even glitter across the whole face; a chunky one shows distinct larger flashes and some darker facets between them.
Wear and the wedding band
Moissanite is Mohs 9.25, so both shapes resist scratching from almost everything. The oval has no corners at all. A cushion's corners are rounded rather than sharp, so they are much less exposed than a princess cut's, but each should still sit under a prong โ four double claws or a four-claw setting placed on the corners is the usual choice.
For the wedding band, the cushion has the advantage. A square cushion rarely extends past where a straight band sits, so a plain straight band usually lies flush. An oval often needs a contour band or a slightly raised setting. If you want the simplest possible band later, the cushion makes it easier.

- Want the largest look for the budget? Oval.
- Want maximum sparkle? A crushed-ice cushion, or an oval.
- Want a calm, antique glow? A chunky cushion.
- Want a straight band to sit flush? Cushion.
- Want soft corners but more length? An elongated cushion around 1.20.
- Either way: ask for video in ordinary light โ no laboratory grades moissanite.
