Moissanite Oval vs Marquise: Which Elongated Shape Wins?
The marquise is the most size you can get per carat. The oval is the easiest elongated shape to live with. Here is what sits between them.

Short answer
Choose a marquise moissanite for the most face-up size per carat of any shape โ about 10 ร 5 mm at 1 ct DEW โ and the strongest finger-lengthening effect. Choose an oval moissanite (about 7.5 ร 5.5 mm) if you want most of that length with no points to protect, an easier wedding band, and a shape that has never gone out of style.
Oval and marquise are the two shapes people pick when they want an elongated stone that looks big for its weight. They share a lot: both are brilliant cuts, both sparkle strongly, both have a bow-tie, and both make fingers look longer. The difference is at the ends. An oval's ends are rounded. A marquise's ends come to two sharp points โ and nearly every practical difference between them follows from that.

Size: the marquise is unbeatable โ up to a point
No shape converts weight into visible size like a marquise. At 1 ct it is about 10 mm long against the oval's 7.5 mm, and it makes the finger look longer than any other stone. If your goal is the largest-looking ring for a budget, the marquise is the answer.
At large sizes that length becomes a limit. A 4 ct marquise runs about 15โ16 mm, which on many hands is longer than the flat span between the knuckle joints. The stone then sits over the joint and the ring rocks as the finger bends โ something no photograph shows. A 4 ct oval is around 12 mm and rarely has this problem. Above about 3 ct, measure that span before choosing a marquise, or consider setting it east-west so its length runs across the finger instead.
Fire and the bow-tie
Both are brilliant cuts and both show plenty of moissanite's colourful fire. Both also have a bow-tie, the darker band across the middle caused by the stone reflecting what is above it. The marquise's is the strongest of any shape, because its long, narrow body stretches the pavilion facets furthest. In a well-cut stone it breaks up and flickers as the ring moves; in a poor one it stays as a fixed dark band. Judge either shape on a handheld video in ordinary light โ never on a still photo.
The marquise's ratio window is also unusually narrow. An oval still looks like an oval anywhere from about 1.30 to 1.55. A marquise outside roughly 1.75โ2.15 stops looking like a marquise at all, and both points must sit exactly on the stone's long axis or the ring looks permanently crooked.

A marquise's two points are the most exposed parts of the stone, so each one sits inside a V-prong โ a small cup of metal shaped to the point. Moissanite helps here: unlike diamond it has no cleavage planes, so its points are less prone to splitting. But what actually fails on marquise rings is almost never the stone. It is the V-prong itself, slowly worn thin by doing its job.
That is not a flaw; it is maintenance. A healthy V-prong tip looks rounded and defined under a loupe; a worn one looks flattened. Re-tipping is quick and inexpensive if it is caught early. So the honest sorting question is simple: will this ring see a jeweller's bench every two years or so? If yes, the marquise is a wonderful choice. If not, the oval is the more forgiving ring. The wedding band
Neither shape usually takes a straight band flush, but the marquise is the hardest fit in jewellery. A contour band for a marquise must clear both a point and its V-prong within a fraction of a millimetre, and the notch becomes the thinnest part of the band. An oval contour band is simpler and more forgiving. Whichever you choose, order the band with the engagement ring so it can be made from the same design file.

- Want nothing to protect and minimal upkeep? Oval.
- Going above 3 ct? Measure your knuckle span first โ or choose oval, or an east-west marquise.
- Want a ring that won't look dated in twenty years? Oval.
- Love a vintage or dramatic look? Marquise, with V-prongs on both points.
- Either way: ask for a rotating video โ no laboratory grades moissanite.
