Pear Cut Moissanite Halo Engagement Ring: A Buyer’s Guide

A teardrop framed in light. How much bigger the halo makes each size, and why the largest options need a little thought before you choose.

Written by the Mapple Gems workshop, Surat Β· Updated 13 October 2026

Short answer: This ring frames a pear moissanite in a halo of small accents, made to order in 925 silver or solid 10K, 14K or 18K gold, in seven sizes from 2 carats (9 Γ— 7 mm) to 5 carats (15 Γ— 9 mm). A halo adds about 2.6 mm each way, so the 5 carat reads at roughly 17.6 Γ— 11.6 mm β€” a true statement size. Check that a V-prong protects the point.

A halo follows the pear’s outline, so the whole head becomes a larger teardrop of light. It suits the pear perfectly: the shape stays clear, and the stone reads much bigger than its carat weight. Our latest order was the largest size, 5 carats, in 14K white gold.

The sizes, with the halo

Size option Pear Approx. head with halo
2 carat 9 Γ— 7 mm 11.6 Γ— 9.6 mm
2.5 carat 10 Γ— 8 mm 12.6 Γ— 10.6 mm
3 carat 12 Γ— 8 mm 14.6 Γ— 10.6 mm
3.5 carat 12 Γ— 9 mm 14.6 Γ— 11.6 mm
4 carat 14 Γ— 8 mm 16.6 Γ— 10.6 mm
4.5 carat 14.5 Γ— 9 mm 17.1 Γ— 11.6 mm
5 carat 15 Γ— 9 mm 17.6 Γ— 11.6 mm

Head sizes are approximate. Above 4 carats the head approaches the length between many people’s knuckles, so measure that space before choosing. The 4 carat (14 Γ— 8 mm) is also noticeably slimmer than its neighbours.

Protecting the point

The pear’s tip is its thinnest part. Moissanite is Mohs 9.25 with no cleavage planes, so it is tough, but an exposed tip can still be nicked. A V-shaped prong over the point protects it while keeping the halo’s outline sharp. Confirm it on the CAD preview, along with which way the point faces β€” traditionally towards the fingertip.

From the workshop

Our latest customer chose the 5 carat, 15 Γ— 9 mm, in 14K white gold β€” a head nearly 18 mm long with the halo. It is dramatic, and it is the kind of ring where the paper test matters most: cut a teardrop about 17.6 Γ— 11.6 mm and hold it on the finger. A large moissanite in white metal also shows strong rainbow fire, because dispersion grows with stone size and a halo multiplies it. Some owners love that; others prefer yellow or rose gold, which softens it noticeably. 14K is the right gold for the many small halo settings.

Before you order: a short checklist

  1. Do the paper test at the full head size, halo included.
  2. Measure the space between your knuckles for the larger sizes.
  3. Confirm a V-prong on the pear’s point.
  4. Choose white metal for most fire, warm metal for a softer look.
  5. Plan a curved or contour band; halos rarely sit flush with a straight one.

Frequently asked questions

How big does a 5 carat pear halo ring look?

The 15 Γ— 9 mm pear reads at roughly 17.6 Γ— 11.6 mm across the head with the halo.

What sizes does the pear halo ring come in?

Seven, from 2 carats (9 Γ— 7 mm) to 5 carats (15 Γ— 9 mm).

How is the pear’s point protected?

With a V-shaped prong that wraps the tip.

Does a halo make moissanite more fiery?

It adds sparkle around the centre. Warm metal softens the effect; white metal shows it fully.

Will a straight wedding band fit?

Usually not flush. A curved or contour band nests around a halo much better.
