Hailey Bieberβs Engagement Ring: Why Elongation Matters More Than Carats
The oval solitaire that set a trend β and the one number that decides whether yours reads the same way.

Short answer: Hailey Bieberβs original 2018 engagement ring is an oval diamond solitaire on a thin yellow gold band, made by Solow & Co.; her 2024 upgrade, by Lorraine Schwartz, is a more elongated oval that she has said is only about a carat larger. The look comes from the stoneβs length-to-width ratio and a slim band, not its weight. Few rings have shaped engagement ring buying as much as Hailey Bieberβs. Justin Bieber proposed in the Bahamas in July 2018 with an oval diamond solitaire on a plain yellow gold band, and oval demand rose sharply in the years that followed. In 2024 she began wearing an upgraded ring β and her own explanation of the difference is the most useful buying lesson in this whole collection.
What is known about the two rings
The 2018 ring was made by Jack Solow of Solow & Co. in New York, who has said he had only a few weeks and that Justin Bieber was involved in choosing the stone. It is an oval solitaire on a slim yellow gold band; estimates of the stone put it somewhere between six and ten carats.
The 2024 ring was designed by Lorraine Schwartz. When reports claimed it was dramatically bigger, Hailey Bieber said it was only about one carat larger β just more elongated. That comment explains the whole look.
Length-to-width ratio: the number behind the look
An ovalβs length-to-width ratio is its length divided by its width. It changes the look far more than a small change in carat weight, because carat is weight, and an elongated stone spreads the same weight into more visible length.

The trade-off with more elongation is the bow-tie, the darker band across the middle that every oval shows to some degree. It gets harder to avoid as the stone gets longer, and it never shows on a grading report or in a still photo. Judge it on rotating video.
Moissanite or lab grown diamond for an oval solitaire?
Lab grown diamond is chemically diamond (Mohs 10, dispersion 0.044), gives the whiter sparkle seen on the original, and includes an IGI certificate. Note that no report grades cut on an oval, so the ratio and video matter more than the letters on the paper. Moissanite (silicon carbide, Mohs 9.25, dispersion 0.104) costs considerably less for the same size and shows more coloured fire, which grows with the stone β a 5 carat oval moissanite is far more colourful in sunlight than a 2 carat one. Yellow gold, which also matches the original, noticeably calms it.

When people bring us this ring as a reference, they almost always ask for a carat size. We ask for a ratio instead. Her own comment β one carat more, just longer β is the clearest public example of something we see at the bench every week: two ovals of the same weight can look like different rings because one is 1.35 and the other is 1.55. How to get the look right
- Choose the ratio first β 1.35 to 1.45 for the 2018 look, 1.50+ for the 2024 look.
- Keep the band slim, but not below about 1.8mm thick at the base if you will wear it every day.
- Choose yellow gold for the closest match; 14K is harder-wearing than 18K.
- Ask for the length and width in millimetres and compare on the moissanite size chart or lab grown diamond size chart.
