Short answer: Selena Gomezβs engagement ring, announced in December 2024, is a large marquise-cut diamond on a yellow gold band set with round diamonds. Published size estimates range from about four to six carats and are unconfirmed. The look depends on two things: an elongated marquise and a band that carries stones. Selena Gomez announced her engagement to Benny Blanco on Instagram on 11 December 2024 with the caption βForever begins now.β The ring surprised people: at a time when ovals dominated, it was a marquise β the long, boat-shaped cut with a point at each end. Widely reported coverage connected the choice to a mention of marquise diamonds in one of her own songs from 2015. The couple married in September 2025, and she now wears a diamond wedding band stacked with it.
What is known about the original ring
From the announcement photographs and later appearances, the ring is a single large marquise diamond set north-south on a yellow gold band carrying round diamonds β a bolder band than the thin pavΓ© styles popular at the time. The carat weight has not been confirmed: jewellers quoted in the press have estimated anything from about four to six carats, with price estimates to match. Treat those figures as guesses.
Why the marquise looks so big
The marquise has the longest outline of any common shape for its weight. Carat is a measure of weight, not size, and a marquise spreads that weight into length, so it looks larger face-up than a round of the same carat. It also lengthens the finger visually. Those two effects are exactly why it suits a statement ring β and why it needs more care than any other shape.

Moissanite or lab grown diamond for a marquise?
A marquise is a brilliant-cut shape, so it sparkles hard in either material. Lab grown diamond (Mohs 10, dispersion 0.044) gives the whiter, crisper sparkle seen in the photographs and comes with an IGI certificate β but, as with every fancy shape, there is no cut grade on the report, so ask for rotating video. Moissanite (Mohs 9.25, dispersion 0.104) shows more coloured fire, and because fire grows with stone size, a 4 or 5 carat marquise moissanite will look noticeably rainbow in sunlight. Yellow gold, which is also the closest match to the original, calms that effect.
Either way, look for the bow-tie: a darker band across the middle that all elongated brilliants show to some degree. It never appears on a report or in a still photograph. Judge it on video under ordinary light.

The two points of a marquise are the thinnest parts of any common cut, and they are where marquise stones chip β in diamond as well as moissanite, because hardness resists scratches, not knocks. So on every marquise we make, each point sits inside a V-prong, a folded claw that wraps the tip instead of a round prong that only touches it. If a ring you are considering shows round prongs at the points, ask to change them. It is a small detail in a photograph and the most important one on the ring.
Living with a stone-set band
- Ask whether the stones go all the way round. A band set right round is a full eternity, and cannot be resized; a band set across the top can.
- Plan the wedding band now. A marquise sits long across the finger and a straight band usually leaves a gap beside it. A contoured band closes it.
- Never stack it directly against a plain gold band without a thought: stones at Mohs 9 and above slowly wear softer gold. Gomezβs own stack pairs stones with stones.
- Book a bench check every couple of years to look at the V-prongs and the small stones in the band.
