The scrollwork on this band is cut right through the metal. Hold the ring against the light and you can see daylight between the curls, which is what separates real pierced work from engraving that only scratches the surface.

A line of milgrain beading runs along both edges of the band and frames the openwork the whole way round. The band stays the same width from front to back and sits flat on the finger, and the scrollwork continues underneath rather than stopping at the shoulders.

How it compares

Our hand engraved scroll band emerald ring carries a solid leaf pattern cut into the surface of a tapering band. This one is open. The curls are pierced through, the band keeps one width all the way round, and the milgrain runs on both edges instead of one. Side by side, the engraved ring reads as a solid gold band with a pattern on it, and this one reads as lace.

Why an emerald cut

Step cut facets give long clean flashes rather than scattered sparkle, which suits an antique style setting. The plainness of the stone is what lets the metalwork be as busy as it is without the ring looking crowded.

Wearing and stacking

Because the band is flat topped and even, a plain flat wedding band sits against it without a gap. A milgrain edged wedding band picks up the beading and is the more natural match.

Mapple Gems is a family run workshop in Surat. Each curl is sawn out by hand and the milgrain is raised bead by bead with a knurling wheel, so no two bands have identical beading. This is the slowest kind of work we do. Every ring is made after you order, usually within 16 to 20 working days.

Care

Warm water, a drop of mild dish soap and a soft brush. Pierced work traps soap, so rinse for longer than you would a plain band and dry it thoroughly. Avoid ultrasonic cleaners, which can loosen fine milgrain over time.

Questions buyers ask

Is pierced work fragile
It is thinner than a solid band by design, but the scroll pattern is a continuous structure rather than isolated cutouts, so it holds its shape in daily wear. We do not recommend it for heavy manual work.

Does the openwork catch on clothing
No. The outer surface is filed and polished flat, and the piercing is on the inside of the pattern.

Can this ring be resized
Only by half a size in either direction. Cutting the band would break the scroll pattern, so please order the correct size. We can send a free plastic ring sizer before you order.

Is moissanite hard enough for daily wear
Yes. Moissanite is 9.25 on the Mohs scale, second only to diamond among stones used in jewellery.

Sizes 3 to 13 including half sizes. Message us before ordering if you need something outside that range.
