A single row of round accents runs the whole way round the centre stone, following its rectangular outline with the corners cut in rather than rounded off. The halo sits close to the girdle, so the stone and its frame read as one shape rather than two.

The band carries pave along about three quarters of its length and rises into a cathedral shoulder where it meets the halo. Behind the finger it goes plain.

How it compares

Our hidden halo emerald rings put the accent row underneath the stone, where it is only visible from the side. This one puts it on top, in full view, which is the difference between a ring that looks like a solitaire from above and one that looks twice the size. If you want the stone to appear as large as possible, this is the setting that does it.

Why an emerald cut

A halo around a step cut has to be rectangular, with the corners mitred to match. Done properly it echoes the stone; done lazily it rounds off and the ring loses its shape. Ours follows the outline exactly.

Wearing and stacking

The halo widens the head, so a straight wedding band meets the ring below the halo rather than against it. A curved band closes the gap.

Mapple Gems is a family run workshop in Surat. Setting a rectangular halo means every corner stone has to be seated at an angle rather than dropped straight in, and the four corners are what a jeweller is judged on. Every ring is made after you order, usually within 14 to 18 working days.

Care

Warm water, a drop of mild dish soap and a soft brush. A halo traps more than a plain setting, so brush around the base of the centre stone from underneath as well as on top. Rinse and dry with a lint free cloth.
