One emerald cut moissanite, four slim tapered claws, and a plain rounded band. Nothing else. The claws are set low and sweep straight down into the shank without a separate gallery or basket, so the head and the band read as a single continuous piece of metal.

This is the design most people picture when they think of an engagement ring, and it is deliberately the plainest thing we make in the emerald cut range. A step cut stone has long clean lines and very little fire compared with a brilliant cut; putting it on an undecorated band lets those lines be the only thing you look at. If the stone is the reason for the ring, this setting stays out of its way.

How it compares to our other plain emerald cut solitaires

We list every design separately, so here is the difference. Our other classic four claw solitaire uses a slimmer, flatter shank with a visible open gallery under the head, which gives it a lighter, more delicate look. This one is built more solidly: the band is rounder and slightly wider in a comfort fit profile, and the claws run straight into the shank with no gallery at all, so there is no gap or openwork under the stone. It is the sturdier and more traditional of the two, and the better choice if you want something that will take daily wear without thinking about it.

Metals and sizes

Choose from 925 sterling silver, or 10K, 14K and 18K gold in yellow, rose and white. All gold is solid, not plated and not filled. White gold is rhodium finished. With no accents anywhere, the metal colour is half the design, so it is worth considering which suits the wearer's skin and the rest of their jewellery. Centre stone sizes run from 2 carat to 5 carat, and the claws are made to fit each stone.

Made to order in our own workshop

Mapple Gems is a family run workshop in Surat, India. Every ring is made by our own team once you order. A plain solitaire has nowhere to hide a flaw, so the band is filed true and polished by hand before the stone goes in. If you would like the band narrower or wider, the claws made heavier, or the profile raised, tell us in the order notes before we begin and we will make it that way at no extra cost.

Care

Moissanite is 9.25 on the Mohs scale and stands up to daily wear. Clean with warm water, a drop of mild dish soap and a soft brush, working the brush under the stone where it meets the claws. Rinse and dry with a soft cloth. With no pave anywhere, this is the lowest maintenance ring in our emerald cut range. Have the four claws checked by a jeweller every year or two, as with any claw setting.

Resizing

A plain band resizes easily, up or down by two sizes or more if needed. Contact us before ordering if you are unsure of the finger size and we will help you measure.

Questions people ask

Is the centre stone a diamond? No. It is moissanite, a gemstone in its own right, and we never describe it as a diamond or a diamond substitute.

Why choose a plain solitaire? Because nothing competes with the stone, because it is the easiest style to wear every day, and because it pairs with any wedding band you choose later.

Will four claws hold a 5 carat stone safely? Yes, when they are made in proportion, which we do. If you would prefer six claws or heavier claws for peace of mind, ask and we will make it that way.

Can I wear a wedding band with it? Yes, and this is the easiest of all our designs to pair. The low head and plain shank mean a straight band sits completely flush.

Does the price change with carat size? Yes. The 2 carat is the base price and each larger size adds a small amount. The exact price appears when you select a combination.
