Moissanite Round vs Marquise: Smallest vs Largest Look per Carat
At the same weight, these two brilliants face up at the two extremes. Here is what you gain and give up at each end.

Short answer
At 1 ct DEW a round moissanite is 6.5 mm across; a marquise is about 10 ร 5 mm โ the most face-up size per carat of any shape. Choose the round for the most fire, no points and the least upkeep. Choose the marquise for the biggest look for your budget and a dramatic, finger-lengthening outline, with V-prongs on both points.
Both are brilliant cuts, and both show plenty of moissanite's colourful fire. But they sit at opposite ends of one important scale: how much of the stone's weight you actually see from above. A round keeps its weight in a compact circle. A marquise stretches the same weight into a long, narrow boat shape with two points. That single difference drives size, upkeep, band fit and comfort.

Size: the biggest gap between any two brilliants
A marquise converts weight into visible size better than any other shape. At 1 ct its length is over half as long again as a round's diameter, and it makes the finger look markedly longer and slimmer. If the goal is the largest-looking ring for the budget, no shape beats it.
That length has a limit. At 4 ct a marquise runs about 15โ16 mm, which on many hands is longer than the flat span between the knuckle joints. The stone then sits over the joint and the ring rocks as the finger bends. A 4 ct round, at about 10.2 mm, never has this problem. Above about 3 ct, measure that span before choosing a marquise โ or set it east-west, across the finger.
Fire and the bow-tie
With a dispersion of 0.104 โ more than twice diamond's 0.044 โ moissanite is colourful in any brilliant shape, and the round shows the most of that colour of any shape. The marquise is close behind, but it also has the strongest bow-tie of any cut: a darker band across its middle where the long pavilion reflects whatever is above the stone. In a well-cut marquise it breaks up and flickers as the hand moves; in a poor one it stays fixed. A round has no bow-tie at all. Judge a marquise only on a moving video in ordinary light.

Everything the marquise gives you comes from its shape, and everything it asks comes from its two points. Each one sits inside a V-prong, the most exposed metal on the ring. Moissanite has no cleavage planes, so its points are tougher than a diamond's โ what wears over the years is the V-prong itself. A healthy tip looks rounded under a loupe; a worn one looks flattened. Re-tipping is quick if it is caught early.
A round asks for none of that. So the honest question is: will this ring see a jeweller every couple of years? If yes, the marquise gives more ring for the money than anything else. If not, the round is the ring that looks after itself. More in V-prongs: the part that is meant to wear out.
The wedding band
This is where the two differ most in practice. A round solitaire usually takes a straight band flush beside it. A marquise needs a contour band cut precisely around a point and its V-prong โ the hardest band fit in jewellery, and one that only fits that ring. Order it with the engagement ring from the same design file.
