Moissanite Round vs Cushion Cut: Classic Sparkle or Vintage Glow?
The two most fiery moissanite shapes, compared on size, style, corners and the one cushion detail no listing tells you.

Short answer
A round and a crushed-ice cushion are the two most fiery moissanite shapes. The round faces up slightly larger โ 6.5 mm against about 6.0 mm at 1 ct DEW โ and has no corners to protect. Choose a cushion for a softer, vintage outline; choose a chunky cushion if you want that look with noticeably less rainbow.
Round and cushion are both brilliant cuts, and both sit at the top of moissanite's fire ranking. A round brilliant is the reference shape for sparkle: 57โ58 facets arranged perfectly around one centre. A cushion is a square or slightly rectangular stone with softly rounded corners, like a pillow. It carries a romantic, antique character that a round does not.

Size: the round faces up larger
It surprises many people, but at the same diamond-equivalent weight a round moissanite looks slightly bigger from above than a square cushion. A cushion is cut deeper and carries more of its weight below the girdle โ part of what gives it that full, plump look from the side. The difference is about half a millimetre at 1 ct and a full millimetre at 2 ct.
If the cushion is your favourite outline but size matters, two things help: an elongated cushion (ratio about 1.15โ1.30) spreads its weight across more of the finger, and a halo โ which suits a cushion particularly well โ adds a ring of light around it.
Fire: a round is predictable, a cushion is not
A well-cut round moissanite always looks like a round moissanite: bright, even, and very colourful, especially above 2 ct. A cushion depends on its faceting, and no listing or report has a field for it.
Crushed ice cushions have many small facets under the table and show a fine, glittering shimmer โ matching the round at the top of the fire ranking. Moissanite's fire grows with size, so a large round becomes one of the most colourful rings you can wear. For someone who loves a soft, classic stone but finds that much rainbow too loud, a chunky cushion is the most natural alternative: similar presence, a vintage feel, and broad flashes instead of a spray of colour. Setting it in yellow or rose gold calms it further, because warm metal reflects into the stone and competes with the coloured flashes.
Before ordering any cushion, ask one question: "Is this crushed ice or chunky?" Then ask for a video in ordinary room light. No laboratory grades moissanite, so the video is the only honest way to see what you are buying.
Wear and the wedding band
Both shapes are Mohs 9.25 and resist scratching from nearly everything. The round has no corners at all. A cushion's corners are rounded rather than sharp, so they are much less exposed than a princess cut's, but each should still sit under a prong. A four-prong setting with the prongs on the corners, or a double-claw version, is the usual choice.
Both shapes are good news for the wedding band. Neither extends along the finger, so a straight band usually sits flush beside either one โ a real advantage over oval, pear and marquise.
How to decide
- Want the most sparkle and a predictable result? Round.
- Want the largest face-up size for the weight? Round.
- Want a romantic, vintage look? Cushion.
- Want that look with less rainbow? Chunky cushion, ideally in warm metal.
- Planning a halo? Either works; the cushion halo is a classic combination.
- Either way: a straight wedding band usually fits.
