Coloured Moissanite: What It Is and What to Watch For

Green, grey, champagne, blue β€” some is deliberate, some is a defect being sold as a feature.

Short answer

Moissanite comes in colours, produced either by doping during growth or by surface coating β€” and the difference matters enormously. Doped colour goes through the whole crystal and is permanent. Coated colour sits on the surface and can wear, scratch through or be affected by repolishing. Separately, a faint green or grey cast in a stone sold as colourless is not a colour option; it is the characteristic tint of lower-grade material. Always ask: doped or coated?

Coloured moissanite is a genuinely interesting category and a legitimately attractive one. It also contains the clearest quality trap in the material, so it is worth understanding the difference between three quite different things sold under similar words.

The first two are legitimate products. The third is the one to recognise, because it is sold as though it were the first.

Doped colour: the real thing

Colour introduced during growth by adding trace elements to the chamber. The colour is part of the crystal lattice, distributed through the whole stone, and it cannot wear off, fade or be polished away.

Common results include champagne and cognac browns, grey, green, blue, and occasionally yellow and pink tones. Availability varies considerably by producer, and the stronger colours are usually harder to source in larger sizes.

Because the colour goes right through, a doped stone can be resized in its setting, repolished, or reset decades later with no effect on the colour at all. It behaves exactly like colourless moissanite in every other respect β€” Mohs 9.25, same durability, same dispersion.

Coated stones and the repair problem nobody mentions. A surface coating can look spectacular β€” iridescent finishes especially β€” and it is not dishonest when disclosed. But it creates a practical issue years later that almost no listing mentions: ordinary jewellery repair can damage it. Steam cleaning, ultrasonic baths, the heat of soldering during a resize, and repolishing can all mark or strip a coating. So a coated stone in a ring you might one day resize is a commitment, and any jeweller who works on it needs telling first. Ask β€œdoped or coated?” before you buy, and write the answer down somewhere with your invoice.

The residual tint problem

This is the part worth being blunt about.

Lower-grade moissanite frequently carries a faint green or grey cast, most visible from the side or against a white background. That tint is a characteristic of the material rather than a deliberate choice, and historically it was one of the reasons early moissanite had a poor reputation.

When a stone with a visible green cast is described as β€œgreen moissanite” or β€œmint”, you are being offered a limitation as a feature. Genuinely doped green moissanite exists and looks quite different β€” a definite, even colour rather than a faint wash over an otherwise colourless stone.

How to tell them apart: ask for video against a plain white background, from the side as well as face-up. A doped stone shows consistent colour throughout. A tinted one shows a faint cast that seems to sit in the depths and varies across the stone.

Choosing a setting for coloured stones

  • Metal amplifies or fights the colour. A champagne stone in yellow gold reads warm and cohesive; the same stone in white metal reads as a tinted diamond, which is usually not the intention.
  • Grey and blue suit white metal for the same reason in reverse β€” the cool metal supports the colour rather than competing.
  • Step cuts show body colour best. Emerald and Asscher cuts have large open facets, so the colour reads clearly. Brilliant cuts break it up with sparkle, which mutes it.
  • Larger is more colourful. Body colour accumulates with depth, so the same material looks stronger at 8Β mm than at 5Β mm β€” the opposite consideration from colourless stones, where depth is a problem.

Questions to ask before ordering

  1. Doped or coated? The single most important question.
  2. If coated, what maintenance restrictions apply β€” ultrasonic, steam, resizing, repolishing.
  3. Video against white, face-up and from the side. Colour claims need seeing, not describing.
  4. Will the colour be consistent across a matched pair? Relevant for earrings, and harder than it sounds.
  5. Can it be replaced if lost? Unusual colours are not always re-sourceable, which matters for a piece you intend to keep.
