What Actually Harms a Moissanite Ring
Almost nothing touches the stone. Nearly everything on the usual warning list is really about the metal.

Short answer
Moissanite is silicon carbide β chemically inert, unaffected by chlorine, bleach, perfume, sunscreen or cosmetics. What those things affect is the metal and the appearance: chlorine attacks alloys and can weaken solder joins over time, and sunscreen and lotion build a film under the stone that dulls it. The genuine risks are impact (a chip, which is a setting question) and prong wear. Take rings off for swimming pools, the gym and cleaning β for the metalβs sake, not the stoneβs.
Care advice for jewellery tends to be a long list of things to avoid, with no explanation of what each one actually damages. That matters here, because the stone and the setting have almost opposite vulnerabilities.

Only the last row is a genuine risk to the stone, and it is a setting question rather than a material one.
Why the stone itself is so hard to harm
Silicon carbide is used industrially for abrasives, brake components and high-temperature semiconductors, which tells you most of what you need to know. It does not oxidise at body temperature, does not dissolve in anything found in a household, and at Mohs 9.25 it is far above the quartz β Mohs 7 β that abrades jewellery day to day.
So the things people worry about most, chlorine and cosmetics, do nothing to it at all. The things that matter are mechanical, and they mostly happen to the ring around it.
The one that surprises people: sunscreen is worse than chlorine. Not for the metal β chlorine is worse there β but for how the ring looks day to day. Sunscreen and hand cream are designed to form a persistent film, and that film collects on the underside of the stone where light enters. Within a couple of weeks a ring can look noticeably lifeless, and almost everyone reads that as the stone having dulled or clouded. It has not. Two minutes with warm soapy water and a soft brush, aimed underneath, restores it completely. This is by far the most common βmy stone has gone dullβ message we receive, and it is never the stone.
The genuine risks, in order
- Prong wear. The most likely cause of an actual loss. Prongs thin gradually over years and then a small knock finishes them β which is why stones go missing without any dramatic incident. A bench check every two years catches it.
- Impact chipping. Hardness resists scratching; toughness resists impact, and they are different properties. A sharp knock against stone, tile or metal can chip any faceted gem. Exposed points on pears, marquises and hearts are most vulnerable, and a bezel setting substantially reduces the risk.
- Shank deformation. Grip loads at the gym are worse than anything chemical. A thin shank goes out of round, and stones set in a flexing shank work loose.
- Chemical damage to the metal. Chlorine and bleach over months and years, not minutes β but it is cumulative and it affects solder joins, which is where rings break.
Ultrasonic cleaners
Safe for the stone, which is unbothered. Not always safe for the ring.
The vibration can shake a marginal stone free, which is exactly the situation where you least want it β you find out a prong was worn by losing the stone rather than by being told. It can also loosen fine pavΓ© and strip a coating from a coloured stone.
Warm soapy water and a soft brush achieves nearly the same result with none of that risk. If you do use an ultrasonic, have the settings checked first.
What to actually do
- Off for the gym, swimming and cleaning. Three habits that remove most of the real risk.
- Clean underneath fortnightly if you use sunscreen or hand cream. This is the whole appearance question.
- Bench check every two years. The only step that prevents a loss.
- Store separately. Most surface scratching happens in a shared box, where one pieceβs stones meet anotherβs metal.
- Do not worry about perfume, cosmetics or ordinary daily life. The stone is genuinely unbothered.
