Oval Moissanite Ring with Bar Set Tapered Baguettes: A Buyer’s Guide

Two glassy baguettes lying across the finger, capped in metal. Why step-cut side stones suit moissanite so well, and why this ring is easy to live with.

Written by the Mapple Gems workshop, Surat Β· Updated 13 October 2026

Short answer: This ring sets an oval moissanite in four claws between two tapered baguette moissanites lying east-west across the finger, wide end towards the centre. Each baguette is held in a bar setting β€” a small band of metal capping each end β€” on a plain rounded shank. It is made to order in 925 silver or solid 10K, 14K or 18K gold, from 2 to 5 carats.

The idea behind this ring is contrast. The oval is a brilliant cut, full of fine sparkle. The baguettes are step cuts, with long flat facets that flash rather than glitter. Set side by side, the oval looks livelier and the baguettes look cleaner, and no claws break the line between them. Our latest order was a 3 carat oval in sterling silver.

Why step-cut side stones suit moissanite

Moissanite’s dispersion is 0.104, more than twice diamond’s, so brilliant-cut moissanites throw colourful fire. Step cuts show the least of it. Using baguettes beside the oval adds width and presence to the ring without adding more rainbow β€” a quieter way to make a centre look bigger than a halo or pavΓ© would.

What a bar setting does

A baguette has square corners, which are its weak points. A bar setting caps each end of the baguette with a strip of metal, covering both corners at that end in one piece. The long sides stay open to the light. It is clean to look at, has nothing to snag, and protects exactly where a step-cut stone needs it.

From the workshop

Our latest customer chose a 3 carat oval in sterling silver, and this is one of the friendlier designs for silver. It sits low, the shank is plain and rounded, and the side stones are held by bars rather than fine claws, so there are fewer thin points of soft metal to wear. The one place to watch is the oval’s four claws, which carry the most load; have them checked once a year in silver. And because the shank is plain, small size changes stay possible later β€” something pavΓ© bands cannot always offer.

Before you order: a short checklist

  1. Ask for the oval’s millimetres and the total width across the baguettes; do a paper test.
  2. Ask for a video showing the baguettes beside the oval in ordinary light.
  3. Check on the CAD that each bar covers the baguette corners.
  4. Choose 14K gold for daily wear; silver works well for this low design.
  5. Plan a wedding band; the baguettes widen the head, so check the fit on the side view.

Frequently asked questions

What is a bar setting?

A setting where a small strip of metal caps each end of the stone, holding it without claws and leaving the long sides open to light.

What is a tapered baguette?

A long, narrow step-cut stone that is wider at one end than the other. Here the wide end faces the centre stone.

Do baguette moissanites show rainbow fire?

Very little. As step cuts they flash rather than sparkle, which contrasts with the fiery brilliant-cut oval between them.

Can this ring be resized?

Yes, within normal limits. The shank is plain metal, which leaves room for small size changes.

Is a bar set ring good for everyday wear?

Yes. It sits low and has no fine claws on the side stones, so there is little to catch or wear.
