Moissanite Pear vs Heart Cut: Two Shapes With a Point

Short answer
Choose a pear moissanite for an elegant, finger-lengthening teardrop that works as an everyday engagement ring โ about 8.0 ร 5.5 mm at 1 ct DEW. Choose a heart (about 6.5 ร 6.5 mm) as a romantic statement piece, ideally above 1 ct so its shape reads clearly. Both sparkle about equally and both need a V-prong on the point.
A pear and a heart both start from a rounded top and narrow to a single point. The heart adds a cleft โ the dip between its two lobes โ and is cut much wider for its length. Shape and size on the hand
A pear stretches along the finger, making it look longer and slimmer. A heart is about as wide as it is long, so it sits broad across the finger and reads as bold rather than elongating. At 1 ct DEW the pear covers a similar area but looks longer; the heart looks wider.
Size matters more for the heart than for any other shape. Its outline depends on a crisp cleft and two clear lobes. In small stones there is too little room for those details, and a small heart can look like a slightly odd round. From about 1 ct upward the shape reads unmistakably. A pear, by contrast, reads as a pear at any size.
Sparkle and cutting
Both are brilliant cuts, and moissanite's dispersion of 0.104 โ more than twice diamond's 0.044 โ gives both a lively, colourful sparkle in the same tier of the fire ranking. Both can show a mild bow-tie across their widest part; in a well-cut stone it breaks up as the hand moves.
A heart is the harder shape to cut well. Its two lobes must be the same size and shape, the cleft must be sharp and centred, and the point must sit exactly on the centre line. A pear needs even shoulders, a centred point and a full belly. Ask for a straight-down photo or video of either shape to check symmetry.
From the workshop: an everyday ring or a statement?
Most people choosing between these two already know the answer to one question: is this a ring they want to wear every day for decades, or a piece that says something specific? The pear is elegant, versatile and has been an engagement favourite for generations. The heart is openly romantic and makes a wonderful anniversary ring, right-hand ring or pendant โ but its symbolism is its point, and not everyone wants that on their hand every day.
Either way, the tip is the part to protect. Moissanite has no cleavage planes, which helps, but every point needs a V-prong. On a heart, the lobes also need prongs, usually one on each side, so the stone sits securely.
The wedding band
A pear extends along the finger and usually needs a contour band shaped around its point. A heart, being wider than it is long, sometimes sits more comfortably beside a straight band, but its point and prongs often still need a small contour or gap. Check the side view of the design before it is made.
