Moissanite Oval vs Radiant Cut: Curves or Corners?
Two elongated brilliants with very different personalities โ compared on size, fire, bow-tie, corners and band fit.

Short answer
Choose an oval moissanite for soft curves, slightly more fire, a larger face (about 7.5 ร 5.5 mm at 1 ct DEW) and no corners to protect. Choose a radiant (about 6.5 ร 5.0 mm) for a bold, geometric rectangle with lively sparkle, no bow-tie problem, and four cropped corners that each need a prong.
Oval and radiant are both elongated brilliant cuts, and both are among the most requested moissanite shapes for engagement rings. The difference is the outline. An oval is all curves โ a stretched round. A radiant is a rectangle with its corners trimmed off, filled with brilliant facets. One reads soft and romantic, the other crisp and architectural.

Size: the oval spreads further
A radiant is cut a little deeper than an oval and carries more of its weight below the surface, so at the same diamond-equivalent weight an oval faces up larger โ about a millimetre longer at 1 ct. Both lengthen the finger. If maximum visible size is the goal, the oval has the edge; if you want the stone to look solid and substantial from the side, the radiant's depth helps.
Fire and the bow-tie
With a dispersion of 0.104 โ more than twice diamond's 0.044 โ moissanite shows plenty of colour in either shape. The oval sits one step higher in the fire ranking, with sparkle that flows along its curves. The radiant's sparkle is more broken up and "crushed", a lively pattern across a geometric face.
The practical difference is the bow-tie. Every oval has a darker band across its middle, caused by the pavilion reflecting what is above the stone; a well-cut one breaks up as the hand moves. Radiants rarely show a noticeable bow-tie because their faceting is arranged differently. If judging a bow-tie on video makes you uneasy, that alone is a reason to lean toward radiant.

On an oval, the thing to check is the bow-tie: ask for a handheld video in an ordinary room, and make sure the dark band flickers and breaks up rather than sitting there as a solid grey stripe. On a radiant, the thing to check is the corners: every one needs its own prong, and the cropped corners should be the same size as each other, or the stone looks subtly lopsided.
No laboratory grades moissanite, so those two checks โ a moving video for the oval, a straight-down look at the corners for the radiant โ are the grading.
Wear and the wedding band
Both are Mohs 9.25. The oval has no corners at all, which makes it the simpler stone to wear every day. The radiant's corners are cropped rather than sharp, so they are much less exposed than a princess cut's, but each still needs a prong. For bands, an oval often needs a contour; a radiant close to square, set low, often takes a straight band, while a long radiant may need a contour too. Check the side view before the ring is made.

- Want the largest face-up size? Oval.
- Want to avoid a bow-tie? Radiant.
- Want nothing to protect? Oval.
- Either way: ask for a video in ordinary light before the stone is set.
