Total Carat Weight Tells You Almost Nothing
Two bracelets at the same stated weight can look completely different, because the number is divided by a stone count nobody publishes.

Short answer
A tennis bracelet is sold by total carat weight, but what you see is individual stone size in millimetres. A 5ct bracelet of 60 small stones and a 5ct bracelet of 30 larger ones look nothing alike. Ask for stone count and stone diameter in mm; 2.5โ3mm per stone is the everyday range, and above about 3.5mm the piece reads as a statement.
Every tennis bracelet listing leads with a carat figure. It is the number people compare, and on this piece it is close to useless on its own โ because unlike a solitaire, where one stone carries the whole weight, a bracelet divides that weight across however many stones fit the length.
The arithmetic that gets hidden
Total carat weight, usually written ctw or cttw, means the combined weight of every stone in the piece. Divide it by the stone count and you get the weight per stone; convert that to millimetres and you have the number that actually describes what the bracelet looks like.
Three variables move together: length, stone count and stone size. Fix any two and the third follows.

Figures are approximate and vary with setting style and how much metal sits between stones โ which is exactly why you should ask for the specific piece's numbers rather than working from a chart.
Note what the table shows: carat weight rises much faster than visible size. Going from 2.5mm to 4mm roughly doubles the diameter of each stone but multiplies the total weight by about two and a half times. That is why a big ctw figure is easy to advertise and tells you little.
Length changes everything
Here is the trap when comparing two listings. A longer bracelet holds more links, so at the same stated total weight each stone is smaller.
A 4ct bracelet at 16cm and a 4ct bracelet at 19cm are not the same product. The shorter one has visibly larger stones. If you are buying for a larger wrist and comparing on ctw alone, you will systematically end up with smaller stones than the listing photograph suggested.
Always compare stone diameter at your length, not total weight.
Where the material choice stops mattering
Stone size is also what decides whether a diamond alternative is detectable here, and the answer is almost always no.
Moissanite disperses light at 0.104 against diamond's 0.044, and that dispersion is the one visual tell. But it needs depth to become visible โ light has to travel far enough through the stone for the colours to separate. Below roughly 3mm there is barely two millimetres of pavilion and the effect never appears.
Every stone in the table above except the last two rows sits inside that range. Which is why a tennis bracelet is the piece where an alternative is least visible and saves most โ the saving multiplies across fifty stones rather than applying to one.
Above about 3.5mm per stone the calculation starts to shift, and at 4mm a moissanite bracelet does show more fire than a diamond one. Worth knowing if you are going large.

There is a second reason to want the stone count in writing, and it is not aesthetic. If the bracelet is ever shortened, links come out โ and links hold stones. The total carat weight on your paperwork then stops matching the piece, which matters at valuation and at any future insurance claim.
So ask for a written line recording stone count, stone diameter in millimetres, and total carat weight together, and update it if the bracelet is ever altered. Choosing a size
- 2.0โ2.5mm โ worn daily, layered with a watch, or stacked. Reads as a fine line of light rather than individual stones.
- 2.5โ3.0mm โ the classic. Individual stones become legible, and it still slides under a cuff.
- 3.0โ3.5mm โ noticeable, and the point at which setting quality becomes visible to anyone.
- 3.5mm+ โ a statement. Heavier on the wrist, more likely to catch, and the range where moissanite's extra fire begins to show.
One practical note on weight: a bracelet is worn on a joint that moves constantly, and a heavy one is felt in a way a heavy ring is not. If it is for someone who does not usually wear jewellery, size down rather than up.
The three numbers to request
- Stone diameter in millimetres, at your chosen length.
- Stone count.
- Finished gram weight of the bracelet.
With those three, plus total carat weight, two bracelets become genuinely comparable. Without them you are comparing a single advertised figure that can be reached in a dozen different ways.
