Where Alternatives Win Most

Not the solitaire everyone shops for. The pieces where the visual difference is smallest and the saving multiplies by forty.

Short answer

Moissanite's extra fire needs depth to become visible, so below about 3mm it is very hard to tell from a diamond. That makes tennis bracelets, eternity bands, pavรฉ, studs and flush-set men's rings the pieces where an alternative is least detectable and saves most โ€” because the saving multiplies across forty to sixty stones. The exact inverse of a large solitaire.

Almost everyone shopping for a diamond alternative is shopping for a centre stone. That is the hardest case for the material, and it is not where the strongest argument lives.

The mechanism

Moissanite disperses light at 0.104 against diamond's 0.044. Dispersion is the splitting of white light into visible colour, and it is what makes people say moissanite looks different.

But the effect needs distance. Light has to travel far enough through the stone for the colours to visibly separate, and the distance available is the depth of the pavilion. Below roughly 3mm there is barely two millimetres of pavilion, the colours never fully separate, and moissanite reads essentially identical to a diamond. Above about 7mm the separation is complete and the fire is unmistakable.

So the material's one visual tell simply switches off in small stones. And small stones are exactly what a great deal of fine jewellery is made from.

Read the top five rows and the bottom one together. The saving on a single large stone is the largest headline number, but it comes with the most visible compromise. The saving across forty small stones is quieter and comes with essentially no compromise at all.

The certification point nobody mentions

Here is something true across the whole trade, in every material: melee under roughly 0.2ct is never individually certified. Not in diamond, not in lab grown, not in anything.

A diamond tennis bracelet with fifty small stones does not come with fifty reports. It comes with a description. So when you buy a diamond version of a small-stone piece, you are already trusting a maker's word about the stones โ€” exactly as you would with an alternative.

The document advantage that lab grown diamond holds over moissanite in a centre stone, where a report exists and can be checked, simply does not apply here. That is worth knowing before paying for it.

We should say plainly that our own catalogue is shaped against this advice. The overwhelming majority of what we make is moissanite, and most of the demand that reaches us is for engagement ring centre stones โ€” the one place where the material's difference shows most and where lab grown diamond has narrowed the price gap from roughly fivefold to closer to twofold.

So the honest version: if you are choosing a large solitaire, look properly at lab grown before assuming moissanite wins on price. And if you are buying a tennis bracelet or an eternity band, moissanite is not a compromise you are settling for โ€” it is the better-reasoned purchase, and the one we would defend hardest.

What to check instead of the stones

If the stones are the easy part on these pieces, the construction is where the money should go and where the questions belong.

  • Tennis bracelet: the clasp matters more than the stones. Insist on a box clasp with a figure-eight safety catch. Fit comes second; stone size a distant third.
  • Eternity band: a full eternity cannot be resized. A three-quarter version looks identical on the hand and stays resizable โ€” the bottom of the shank faces your palm and nobody sees it.
  • Pavรฉ: setting removes metal, so ask for 1.8mm at the base after the seats are cut. The visible quality signal is a level stone row โ€” look along it in daylight.
  • Studs: "1ct studs" usually means 0.5ct per ear. Ask for post thickness and length. Butterfly backs are why single earrings go missing.
  • Men's flush-set band: flush is the right build because a raised prong catches on a gripping hand. 5โ€“6mm wide, 1.8mm+ thick.

One rule that applies across all of them: pavรฉ and melee cost is labour, not stones. Each stone is a drill-seat-set-bead sequence by hand under magnification. Forty stones is forty of those. That is why a well-made small-stone piece is not cheap in any material โ€” and why the stone choice moves the price less than people expect.

Where alternatives win least

For balance, the inverse cases:

  1. A large solitaire above about 7mm, where the extra fire is unmistakable.
  2. Anything below roughly 0.30ct where you were considering lab grown diamond โ€” at that size the price difference narrows enough that the reason to choose moissanite over it largely disappears.
  3. Any purchase where an independent report matters to you, since no laboratory grades moissanite for colour, clarity or cut.
