Oval Lab Grown Diamond Ring with Shared Prong Band: A Buyerβs Guide
Larger accent diamonds, light between each one, a scalloped edge. What a shared prong band does differently from pavΓ©, and what to check on an oval centre.

Short answer: This ring sets an oval lab grown diamond, E colour and VVS2 clarity with a free IGI report, above a band of larger accent diamonds held between shared prongs. It is made to order in 925 silver or solid 10K, 14K or 18K gold, from 2 to 5 carats. Shared prong lets more light into each accent than pavΓ© and gives the band a scalloped edge.
A diamond band can be built in several ways. Standard pavΓ© uses many small stones on tiny beads. This ring uses fewer, larger accents, each sharing a prong with its neighbour, so light passes between them and the edge of the band scallops gently. The result is bolder and brighter. Our latest order was a 2 carat oval in 14K yellow gold.
Shared prong compared with pavΓ©
| Shared prong | PavΓ© | |
|---|---|---|
| Accent size | Larger | Smaller, more of them |
| Light | Enters between stones | Mostly from above |
| Look | Bold, scalloped edge | Fine, continuous glitter |
| Worth knowing | Each prong holds two stones | Beads are tiny and need checks |
The one trade-off is in the name: each prong holds two stones. If one prong is bent, both neighbours can loosen. That is a reason for a bench check every two years, not a reason to avoid the style.
What E colour and VVS2 mean on your hand
Lab grown diamond is real diamond β Mohs 10, refractive index 2.42, dispersion 0.044 β and graded on the same scales. E is near the top of the colourless range; VVS2 means inclusions very hard to find even at 10Γ. On the hand, both read as completely clean and white. Remember that metal changes what you see: diamonds are graded face-down against white but worn face-up in metal. In yellow gold, as our latest customer chose, the metal reflects warmth into the stone, so the difference between the top colour grades is hard to see. White gold shows a top grade most fully.
What the report does not show on an oval
The IGI report gives colour, clarity, measurements, a plot of inclusions and an inscription number. It does not give a cut grade (only rounds get one) and it does not show the bow-tie, the dark band some ovals show across the middle. A rotating video in ordinary light answers both. Check the measurements too: divide length by width; most people prefer an oval between 1.35 and 1.45.
From the workshop
Accent stones are where paperwork stops. No laboratory issues individual reports for small accents in any material, so their quality is the makerβs description. On this ring the accents are lab grown diamonds, like the centre. We think that is worth saying plainly, because many rings sold as βlab grown diamondβ name only the centre stone and use another material on the band without mentioning it. Whoever you buy from, it is a fair question: βwhat material is every stone in this ring, in writing?β
Before you order: a short checklist
- Choose the metal first; it changes how the colour reads.
- Ask for the stoneβs measurements and a rotating video.
- Check the band thickness at the base: 1.8 mm or more.
- Get your size right first; a stone-set band limits resizing.
- On arrival, match the girdle inscription to the IGI report.

Frequently asked questions
What is a shared prong setting?
A band where each prong holds the edges of two neighbouring stones, so larger accents can sit close together with light passing between them.
Is shared prong better than pavΓ©?
It is bolder and brighter, with larger accents. PavΓ© gives a finer glitter. Both need occasional setting checks.
Does the centre stone come with a certificate?
Yes, a free IGI report. Check that the girdle inscription matches the report number.
Are the accent stones lab grown diamonds too?
Yes, the listing describes them as accent diamonds. Accents in any material are not individually certified.
What is a bow-tie in an oval diamond?
A dark band across the middle of some ovals. It does not appear on reports, so judge it from a rotating video in ordinary light.
