Do Lab Grown Diamonds Fluoresce?

Some do, and it is neither a fault nor a feature. Here is when it actually matters.

Short answer

Some do. Fluorescence is a glow β€” usually blue β€” that appears under ultraviolet light, not in ordinary daylight or indoor lighting. It is caused by trace elements in the crystal, and it is common in HPHT-grown stones and less so in CVD. In everyday life you will almost never see it. It matters in exactly two situations: strong fluorescence can make a stone look slightly hazy in direct sunlight, and it becomes visible under the UV lighting used in some bars and clubs.

Fluorescence is one of the more misunderstood entries on a grading report. It sounds like a defect, is priced as though it were, and in the overwhelming majority of cases has no effect on anything you will ever notice.

What it is

Certain trace elements within a diamond’s crystal lattice absorb ultraviolet light and re-emit it as visible light. Boron and nitrogen are the usual causes. The result is a glow β€” most often blue, occasionally yellow, white or orange β€” under a UV source.

Crucially, ordinary indoor lighting contains very little UV. Daylight contains some. So a stone graded β€œstrong blue” will look entirely normal in your kitchen and may glow visibly under a blacklight.

CVD vs HPHT: a genuine difference

This is one of the few places where the growth method has a practical consequence.

HPHT stones are grown with a metal catalyst and often incorporate trace elements that produce fluorescence β€” so fluorescence is more common in HPHT production.

CVD stones are grown from gas without a metal catalyst, and typically show little or no fluorescence. Where CVD stones do glow, it is sometimes a different character from the classic blue.

So if you specifically want a stone with no fluorescence at all, CVD is statistically the likelier route β€” though the report tells you directly, which is more reliable than the generalisation.

The pricing quirk worth knowing. In the mined diamond trade, strong fluorescence typically reduces a stone’s price β€” a convention that took hold decades ago on the basis that it could cause haziness. That discount often carries across to lab grown pricing by habit. Which means: if you genuinely do not care about UV appearance, a fluorescent stone can be the same stone for less money. Ask whether the price reflects a fluorescence discount. On a stone you will wear under kitchen lights and office lights for forty years, it may be the easiest saving available.

When it genuinely matters

Two situations, and only two.

1. Direct sunlight, with strong or very strong fluorescence. A minority of stones in these grades can look slightly soft or milky in bright sun, because the glow interferes with the stone’s normal light return. It is a minority effect even at strong grades β€” and equally, some faint blue fluorescence can make a very slightly warm stone appear a touch whiter, which works in your favour.

2. UV lighting environments. Bars, clubs, some bowling alleys, certain stage lighting. Here a medium or strong fluorescent stone will visibly glow blue. Some people find this delightful; others find it startling the first time. Nothing is wrong with the stone.

Outside those, in ordinary daylight and indoor light, you will not see it.

Does it affect durability or value?

Durability: no. Fluorescence is an optical property of trace elements, not a structural weakness. A fluorescent diamond is exactly as hard and as tough as one that does not fluoresce.

Value: only through the pricing convention above. And since lab grown diamonds have very little resale value in any case, the point is largely academic β€” the practical effect is on what you pay, not on what you recover.

What to do about it

  1. Check the report. IGI and GCAL report fluorescence directly. Note that GIA’s post-October-2025 lab grown assessment presents information differently, so an IGI report gives you more here.
  2. If it says none or faint, stop thinking about it. There is nothing to consider.
  3. If it says strong or very strong, ask for video in daylight. This is the only way to know whether that particular stone shows haziness β€” most do not.
  4. Ask whether the price reflects a fluorescence discount. If it does and you do not mind, that is a real saving.
  5. Consider where you spend your evenings. If UV-lit venues are part of your life, a non-fluorescent stone avoids surprises.

Frequently asked questions

Is fluorescence bad in a lab grown diamond?

No. It is an optical property caused by trace elements, not a flaw, and it has no effect on hardness or durability. In ordinary indoor lighting you will not see it at all. It matters only under UV light, and in a minority of strongly fluorescent stones viewed in direct sunlight.

Why does my diamond glow blue under a blacklight?

If you want to avoid it, CVD is statistically likelier β€” but the grading report tells you directly, which is more reliable.

Are fluorescent diamonds cheaper?

Often, yes. A pricing convention from the mined diamond trade discounts strongly fluorescent stones, and that habit frequently carries over to lab grown pricing. If UV appearance does not concern you, that discount can be an easy saving on a stone you will wear under ordinary lighting for decades.
