Fifty Times the Same Four Steps
A tennis bracelet is the most labour-dense thing a small workshop makes. Understanding why explains its price better than any carat figure.

Short answer
Each stone in a tennis bracelet is a separate sequence at the bench: cut the seat, place the stone, secure it, finish it. Fifty stones is fifty of those, by hand, under magnification β then every link is joined and the whole thing is finished. The cost is labour, not stones, which is why changing the stone material moves the price far less than people expect.
Buyers assume a tennis bracelet is priced by its total carat weight. It is a reasonable assumption and it is wrong, because melee β the small stones a bracelet is made of β is inexpensive in every material, and it is never individually certified in any of them.
What you are paying for is time at a bench.
The sequence, per stone
- Cut the seat. A setter cuts a notch into the metal for the stone's girdle to sit inside. The stone is supported from below and retained from above β it is not gripped from outside. Cut the seat unevenly and the stone sits permanently tilted.
- Place the stone. Seated level, at exactly the same height as its neighbours, with the table square to the line of the bracelet.
- Secure it. Prongs worked over the girdle, or a bezel rim closed round it, or beads raised from the surrounding metal β depending on the setting style.
- Finish it. The metal around the setting is cleaned up, so the piece does not read as fifty separate operations.
Now multiply by fifty. Under magnification. With no step recoverable if the seat is cut wrong.

Two consequences follow, and they run in opposite directions.
First, a well-made bracelet is not cheap in any material, because the labour is the same whether the stones are moissanite, lab grown diamond or mined. Anyone offering a fifty-stone set bracelet at a price that only makes sense if the stones were free has saved the money somewhere β and the place to save it is the setting time.
Second, this is exactly why a bracelet is where a diamond alternative makes the most sense. Below about 3mm the extra dispersion that distinguishes moissanite is not visible at all, so the stones look the same β and the saving multiplies across forty or sixty of them without any visual compromise.
The one quality signal you can see for free
Look along the stone row from the side, in daylight.
Fifty stones set properly form a single flat line. Stones sitting at slightly different heights, or a row that drifts off the centre line, means seats cut at speed. It is the most honest evidence available about how much bench time went into a piece, it requires no expertise, and it is visible in a photograph if you ask for one taken from the side rather than from above.
Two more, if you have a 10Γ loupe: are the facet junctions on the stones crisp rather than soft, and are the prong tips rounded defined lips rather than flattened squares?

The step nobody outside a workshop knows about is matching the parcel, and it happens before any setting begins. Melee under roughly 0.2ct is never individually certified in any material, so the stones for one bracelet are selected as a batch by eye β matched for size, for colour and, on moissanite, for how they behave in the same light. Fifty stones that are each fine individually can look wrong together if two of them are half a shade off.
That selection takes time and produces no document at the end of it, which is why it is the easiest cost in the whole piece to skip. So the useful question is not "are the stones certified" β they never are, from anyone β but "were they matched as a parcel, and can I see a side-on photograph of the finished row?"
After the stones: the parts that decide lifespan
Setting is most of the work but not all of it. Three things happen afterwards that matter more to how long the bracelet lasts than any stone does.
The links are joined. How much movement is designed between them decides whether the bracelet drapes and turns on the wrist or sits stiffly in an arc. Ask for a video of it hanging and moving, not laid flat.
The end connectors and clasp go on. Ask whether the end links are soldered closed rather than left as open jump rings, and insist on a box clasp with a figure-eight safety catch.
The underside is finished. This is the part nobody is expected to see and therefore the fastest place to save time. Ask for a photograph from underneath β it is the most revealing image of any piece of jewellery and almost nobody publishes it.

- Stone count and stone size in millimetres β not just total carat weight.
- Were the stones matched as a parcel?
- Finished gram weight, and whether the links and clasp are solid or hollow.
- A side-on photograph of the stone row, in daylight.
