Four Settings, Four Different Bracelets
Prong, bezel, channel or flexible link. The choice decides how much light gets in, how much maintenance you inherit, and how the bracelet moves on the wrist.

Short answer
Four-prong is the classic: most light, most sparkle, most setting points to maintain. Bezel is the most durable and the lowest-maintenance, at the cost of some brightness. Channel sits flush and catches on nothing. Flexible or half-bezel links sit between the two. For daily wear on a wrist that meets desks and door handles, bezel is the underrated answer.
Almost every tennis bracelet sold is four-prong, and almost every buyer assumes that is simply what a tennis bracelet is. It is not β it is one of four builds, and it is the one that photographs best rather than the one that wears best.

Why the prong count matters here and not on a ring
On a solitaire ring, four prongs is four things to inspect. On a fifty-stone tennis bracelet, four-prong means roughly two hundred individual pieces of metal, each one thinning slowly, each one capable of releasing a stone.
That is not an argument against prongs. It is an argument for knowing what you are choosing, because it changes the maintenance from an occasional thought to a standing commitment: a bench check every two years rather than every five, and a real chance of re-tipping work somewhere in the first decade.
Shared-prong settings look tidier because there is less metal between stones β but the trade is real: one prong retains two stones, so when it wears, two stones are at risk rather than one.
A bezel holds each stone continuously with a rim of metal rather than at points. There is no thin projecting element to wear through, which is why it needs the least attention of the four.
Light, and how much you actually lose
The case for prongs is light. Open sides let light into the pavilion from every direction, and on a piece whose whole purpose is a moving line of sparkle, that matters.
A bezel closes those sides, so the stone works with light entering through the table. On a well-cut stone the difference is modest. On a shallow one it is not β a shallow stone was already leaking light and now has less to work with.
Two things reduce the gap. A thin-rim bezel gives most of the protection while covering the least stone. And an open back β the underside of each setting left open rather than closed β lets light in from beneath and, just as importantly, is the only way a fifty-stone bracelet can actually be cleaned. Hand cream collects on the pavilion, which is exactly where a faceted stone returns light from, and a closed back means no brush ever reaches it.

A view we hold that is not universal: for a tennis bracelet in 925 silver, a bezel should be the default rather than an option. Sterling sits at about Mohs 2.6 against a stone at 9.25 or 10 β a wider hardness gap than against gold. Silver prongs deform and thin far faster than gold ones, so the stones stay perfect while the fifty small things holding them give way. A bezel has no thin projecting element to fail.
And the concession: bezel setting is more labour than prong setting, so we are recommending the build that costs more to make. In 14K or 18K gold a prong bracelet is entirely reasonable and we will happily make one. In silver we would rather talk you into the rim.
The part between the settings
People compare settings and forget that a tennis bracelet is also a chain. Each setting is joined to the next, and those joints decide how the piece hangs.
A bracelet with generous articulation drapes round the wrist and turns as the arm moves, which is what makes the line of stones catch light. A stiff one sits in an arc and tends to roll so the stones face sideways.
Two things to ask about. Are the joints solid or hollow? Gram weight answers it, and hollow links crush rather than bend, splitting at the seam with no solid metal for solder to key into β which is why some bracelet breaks genuinely cannot be repaired invisibly. And how much movement is there between links? Ask for a video of the bracelet hanging and moving, not laid flat on a surface.
What to specify
- Setting type β and if prong, whether individual or shared.
- Open backs on the settings, so the stones can be cleaned from underneath.
- Solid rather than hollow links; ask for the gram weight.
- A thin rim if you choose bezel β protection without covering the stone.
- A box clasp with a figure-eight safety catch, whichever setting you pick.
- A video of it hanging and moving, not photographed flat.
And the free quality check on any of the four: look along the stone row from the side in daylight. Stones sitting at slightly different heights, or a line that wanders off centre, means seats cut at speed. On a fifty-stone piece that is the clearest visible evidence of how much bench time went in.
