Oval Moissanite French Set Pavé Hidden Halo Ring: A Buyer’s Guide

Scalloped windows under each accent, a single row of stones beneath the oval. What French setting is, and why it makes a band brighter.

Written by the Mapple Gems workshop, Surat · Updated 13 October 2026

Short answer: This ring sets an oval moissanite in four claws above a single-row hidden halo, on a band of French set pavé: the metal under each accent is cut away in a V so light enters from the side as well as the top. The accents are larger than standard pavé. It is made to order in 925 silver or solid 10K, 14K or 18K gold, from 2 to 5 carats.

French setting is a detail most people never notice by name and always notice by effect. Look at this band from the side and you see a row of scalloped windows rather than a solid strip of metal. Each window lets light into the accent above it, so the band looks brighter than ordinary pavé. Our latest order was a 2 carat oval in sterling silver.

What French set pavé is

In standard pavé, small stones sit in drilled seats and are held by tiny beads; the metal around them is solid. In French set pavé, the setter cuts a V-shaped notch beneath each stone. The stone is still held by small prongs, but now it has an opening below it as well as above. More light enters, more light returns, and the band gains a delicate scalloped profile.

The single-row hidden halo

Under the oval, a straight row of small round moissanites runs across the top of the basket. You see it from the side and from slightly above, but not from directly overhead, so the face of the ring stays a clean oval. Like any hidden halo, it lifts the stone a little higher than a plain basket would, so check the side view on the CAD preview.

From the workshop

French set pavé has a practical advantage people rarely hear about: it is easier to keep bright. In standard pavé, soap and hand cream collect beneath the stones where a brush cannot reach, and the band slowly dulls. The V windows on a French set band open that space up, so a soft toothbrush through the sides cleans the underside of every accent. Our latest customer chose this ring in sterling silver at 2 carats; in silver, also look at the tiny prongs on the band every few months, because silver (about Mohs 2.6) is softer than gold and those prongs are where wear starts.

Before you order: a short checklist

  1. Ask for the oval’s millimetres at your chosen carat, and do a paper test.
  2. Check the side view on the CAD for head height.
  3. Get your size right first; a pavé band limits resizing.
  4. Choose 14K gold for daily wear; silver for trying the design.
  5. Plan a wedding band that sits beside the pavé without rubbing it.

Frequently asked questions

What is French set pavé?

Pavé where the metal beneath each stone is cut away in a V, so light enters from the side as well as above and the band shows a scalloped profile.

Is French set pavé more sparkly than regular pavé?

Yes, usually. More light reaches each accent, and on this ring the accents are also larger than standard pavé.

Is a French set band durable?

Yes, with normal care. Like any pavé, the small prongs should be checked every couple of years, or yearly in silver.

Can you see the hidden halo from above?

Not from directly overhead. It shows from the side and from slightly above, keeping the face of the oval clean.

How do I clean a French set pavé band?

Soak it in warm soapy water and brush gently through the V windows on the sides with a soft toothbrush, then rinse in a bowl.
