Alternatives at Three Carats and Above

Where the saving is largest, the difference is most visible, and the price curve behaves in a way nobody explains.

Short answer

Above roughly 7mm moissanite's fire becomes unmistakable, so a large alternative is a less convincing diamond lookalike than a small one. What it gains instead is a price curve that rises far more gently with size than diamond's does β€” and most large-stone disappointments turn out to be setting failures rather than stone failures.

Large stones are where alternatives are most tempting and least discreet at the same time. Both halves of that are worth understanding before ordering, because at three or four carats the decisions are expensive to reverse.

The price curve is the real argument

Diamond pricing, mined or lab grown, steps up at round carat figures β€” 1.00, 1.50, 2.00, 3.00. Those thresholds are trading conventions, and the jumps at them are substantial. Price also rises faster than weight does, because larger rough is scarcer.

Moissanite does not behave that way. Supply is not constrained by geology, the chain from producer to buyer is far shorter, and there is no inherited marketing premium attached to size. The result is a price curve that rises much more gently as the stone grows.

So the proportional saving from choosing an alternative increases with size. At half a carat the gap is modest. At four carats it is the largest single sum most people will save on a piece of jewellery. That is the honest commercial case for a big alternative, and it does not depend on anyone being fooled.

What you accept in exchange

Moissanite disperses light at 0.104 against diamond's 0.044, and dispersion needs depth to show. Below about 3mm it is invisible. Above roughly 7mm it is unmistakable β€” and a 3ct stone is around 9mm, a 4ct around 10mm.

This produces the rule that surprises people: a larger moissanite is a less convincing diamond substitute than a smaller one. Shape and size also multiply, so a big round or crushed-ice cushion is the loudest combination available.

Three levers control it, all decided before casting: a step cut (emerald or Asscher) rather than a brilliant; warm metal, which reflects into the pavilion and competes with the dispersed colour; and no full halo, which would add twenty-five to forty-five more dispersing stones.

Two rows deserve emphasis. A "4ct" moissanite is a diamond equivalent weight, not a real one β€” the material is about 15% less dense, so the stone actually weighs around 3.5ct. Compare millimetres between materials, never carats.

And the round-number trick works on the diamond side: prices step at 3.00, so a 2.90ct stone is fractionally smaller and sits below the threshold. Ask for both quotes.

The repairs we see on large stones are almost never stone problems. They are shank problems. A four-carat head is roughly twice the mass of a two-carat one sitting on the same geometry, and on an elongated shape that mass loads one axis. Below about 1.8mm the shank goes out of round within a few years, and once it deforms the setting above stops sitting square and the prongs load unevenly.

The concession: thin, delicate shanks photograph better than thick ones, which is a large part of why they are so widely sold β€” ours included. We will make one if you insist. We would rather tell you first that it is the specification most likely to bring the ring back to a bench before its tenth birthday. And we should admit our product pages still do not publish gram weight or shank thickness, which are the two numbers this paragraph says to check.

The size the hand can actually carry

Apparent size is a ratio between stone and finger, not an absolute. The same stone reads far larger on a size 4 hand than on a size 7 β€” a 5.8mm stone on a size 4 reads roughly the way a 7mm one does on a size 7.

Two checks worth doing before ordering at this weight. Cut a paper shape at the stone's actual millimetres and hold it against the hand it is for. And for elongated shapes, measure the flat span between the knuckle joints: a 4ct marquise runs 15–16mm, which on many hands exceeds that span, so the stone sits over the joints and the ring rocks as the finger bends.

Judging a large alternative

No laboratory grades moissanite for colour, clarity or cut, so at this size you are the cut grader β€” and cut faults amplify with size. Four checks, all on a rotating handheld video in ordinary room light rather than a lightbox spin:

  1. Crisp facet junctions rather than soft, blurred meeting points. The fastest cutting-quality proxy on anything not cut-graded.
  2. No fixed dark zone. A dull patch that stays put through the whole rotation means a shallow cut leaking light.
  3. Measurements against standard. Measuring larger than standard for the stated equivalent weight is a shallow-cut warning, not a bonus.
  4. Optic-axis softness. Moissanite is doubly refractive; a stone cut off-axis shows a faint lack of crispness through the table. Invisible at 4mm, visible at 10mm.

One more thing to remember at any large size: there is no upper price anchor on moissanite because nothing is graded, so a higher price is not evidence of a better stone.

What goes wrong most often with large stones?

The setting rather than the stone. A heavy head loads the shank unevenly, and below about 1.8mm the band goes out of round within a few years, after which the setting stops sitting square. Ask for 2mm at the base and a euro shank at this weight.

Does a higher price mean a better large moissanite?

Not reliably. Because no laboratory grades moissanite, there is no upper price anchor and any quoted grades are seller assessments. Judge the stone on a rotating video in ordinary light and check its measurements against standard for the stated equivalent weight.
