Repair or Replace? When a Ring Is Worth Saving

Most rings are repairable long past the point people assume. A few are not, and it is worth knowing which.

Short answer

Almost anything is repairable while there is enough metal left to work with. Worn prongs, a thin shank, a lost stone, a bent band, a broken clasp β€” all routine. The genuine end points are: a shank worn so thin it cannot hold a solder join, a piece polished so many times the detail is gone, and hollow construction that has crushed. The decision is usually not can it be repaired but whether the repair cost approaches replacement β€” and sentiment legitimately outweighs that.

Rings are brought to a bench in far worse condition than people expect can be saved, and most of them go home fixed. Here is a realistic map of what is routine, what is expensive, and what is genuinely the end.

Routine, and cheaper than people fear

Reshanking is the repair that saves rings people had written off. A band worn paper-thin at the bottom looks terminal, and it is not: a jeweller cuts out the thin section and solders in a new piece of matching metal, then shapes and finishes it. Done properly, the join is invisible and the ring is structurally new where it was weakest, with the original head, stones and detail untouched. It costs a fraction of replacement. If someone has told you a thin-shanked ring is beyond saving, get a second opinion β€” this is one of the most common repairs there is.

Harder, but usually possible

  • A lost centre stone. Straightforward if you have the specification β€” millimetre size, shape, material. With lab grown and moissanite, matching is easy because the material is consistent. With a mined diamond it is harder and more expensive.
  • Re-cutting worn milgrain. Achievable two or three times over a lifetime, since each pass removes metal.
  • Resizing a stone-set shank. Possible where there is any plain metal at the back; expensive where stones must be removed and reset.
  • Rebuilding a damaged gallery or basket. Real bench work, but the original stones and shank are preserved.
  • Repairing a chipped stone. Sometimes recut smaller, which means a new setting. Often better to replace the stone in the existing setting.

The genuine end points

Four situations where the honest answer is that repair is not the right route.

  1. A shank too thin to hold a join. Soldering needs material either side. Below a certain thickness the metal cannot take the heat without collapsing β€” though a full reshank often still solves it, so ask before accepting this verdict.
  2. Hollow construction that has crushed. Hollow tube dents rather than bends, and a crushed hollow link or hoop cannot be restored to its original form.
  3. Plated pieces where the plating has worn through. Replating is possible, but on base metal it is a temporary fix on a piece with no intrinsic value β€” usually not worth the labour.
  4. A full eternity band needing a size change. No plain metal to cut, so it is a remake rather than a repair.

How to make the decision

Three questions, in order.

1. What does the repair actually cost? Get a quote before assuming. Reshanking, re-tipping and stone replacement are frequently a small fraction of a new ring, and people routinely overestimate them by a large margin.

2. What is being preserved? If the ring is a stock design with no history, and repair approaches half of replacement, replacing may be sensible. If it carries meaning, that calculation does not apply and should not be forced to.

3. Will it recur? A ring that has worn thin once will wear thin again unless something changes. Reshanking with slightly heavier metal, or moving to 14K from 18K, addresses the cause rather than the symptom.

Before you send anything anywhere

  1. Photograph it from every angle, including underneath and inside the shank, before it leaves your hands.
  2. Note the stone specifications if you have them β€” millimetres, material, any report number.
  3. Ask for a written quote covering the work, the metal used, and whether stones will be removed.
  4. Say explicitly if there is detail you want preserved β€” milgrain, engraving, a hand finish. Polishing removes these by default.
  5. Ask whether the piece is coated if a stone is coloured, since heat and ultrasonic cleaning can strip a coating.

The middle option people forget

Not repair, not replacement: reset the stones into a new piece. The stones you own are the expensive part; the metal is the part that wore out. A new setting built around existing stones costs meaningfully less than a wholly new ring and keeps the material continuity that mattered.

It is also the natural moment to fix whatever caused the wear β€” a thicker shank, a lower profile, a bezel instead of prongs. Many people find the second version is the one they actually wanted.
