Sterling Silver Wedding Bands: The Honest Limits

Short answer

Sterling silver is genuine precious metal and a legitimate choice β€” but at Mohs 2.6 it is softer than any gold, it tarnishes because of the copper in the alloy, and a thin silver band worn daily will deform within a few years. It works well for occasion pieces, wide bands, bezel-set designs and as a way to test a design before committing. For a ring worn every day for decades, 14K gold is the more practical answer, and we will say so.

Silver is where a lot of people start, and there are good reasons for that: it is affordable, it is a real precious metal, and it looks like white gold at a fraction of the cost. It also has limits that are worth knowing before rather than after.

The two properties that set the limits

Hardness. Sterling silver sits at roughly Mohs 2.6 β€” softer than 14K gold at around 3.0–3.5, and far softer than the quartz in ordinary household dust at 7. It marks easily and, more importantly, it deforms: a narrow silver band goes gradually out of round under everyday grip pressure in a way a gold one does not.

Tarnish. Sterling is 92.5% silver with the remainder usually copper. Silver reacts with sulphur compounds in the air to form a dark surface film. This is not damage β€” it polishes off completely β€” but it recurs, and it recurs faster in humid or coastal air.

The advice that loses us the sale, and is still correct. If a silver band is going to be a wedding ring worn every day for the next thirty years, we would rather you bought 14K gold β€” even a narrower, plainer 14K band than the silver design you were considering. Silver at that duty cycle needs reshaping, repolishing and, if it is stone-set, prong work, and the accumulated cost and inconvenience over decades exceeds the difference at purchase. Where silver genuinely works well

  • Occasion and secondary pieces. A band worn sometimes rather than always faces a fraction of the wear, and silver is entirely adequate for that.
  • Wide bands. Width compensates for softness. A 4Β mm silver band resists deformation far better than a 1.8Β mm one, and costs very little more.
  • Bezel-set designs. A bezel holds a stone with a continuous collar rather than fine prongs, so the softness of the metal matters much less.
  • Testing a design. Genuinely useful: have a design made in silver, live with it for a few months, then commit to gold once you know the width, profile and height are right.
  • A work ring. Some people keep a silver band for jobs where they would rather not risk the real one. That is a sensible use of it.

Making silver last longer

  1. Go wider than you would in gold. The single most effective change, and nearly free.
  2. Ask about rhodium plating. It puts a hard, inert layer over the silver, so it neither tarnishes nor marks as readily. It wears and needs redoing every year or two, but it transforms daily wearability.
  3. Choose a brushed finish. Silver shows scratches sharply on a mirror surface. A satin finish absorbs them.
  4. Store it dry and sealed. Tarnish is an air reaction, so an airtight bag with an anti-tarnish strip slows it dramatically between wears.
  5. Take it off for the gym, swimming and cleaning. Chlorine and household cleaners are harder on silver than on gold.

The green finger question

Silver can leave a dark or greenish mark on skin. This is the copper in the alloy reacting with sweat, not the silver itself, and it is harmless β€” it washes off and leaves nothing behind.

It varies enormously between people and can start after years with the same ring, because skin chemistry changes. Keeping the ring dry helps, and rhodium plating largely eliminates it by putting a barrier between alloy and skin.

If instead you get redness, itching or a rash, that is a different thing and worth seeing a doctor about rather than working through metals by guesswork.

Silver with moissanite

A common and reasonable pairing β€” both are affordable, and a white metal keeps a moissanite reading neutral.

The one caution is structural rather than aesthetic: moissanite at Mohs 9.25 is dramatically harder than silver at 2.6, so in a prong setting the prongs will wear before anything happens to the stone. On a silver piece with a significant centre stone, a bezel or half-bezel is the better build, and a prong check every couple of years matters more than it would in gold.
