Will a Straight Band Fit?

More often than with any other fancy shape โ€” which is exactly why so many people assume it and never check. The test takes ten seconds and has to happen before casting.

Short answer

An emerald cut has flat parallel sides and a squared-off outline, so a plain straight band sits flush against it more readily than against an oval, pear or marquise. Whether it actually does depends on the head, not the stone: setting height, cathedral shoulders and any side stones all decide it. Hold a straight edge against the side elevation of the CAD. Visible daylight beneath the stone means a straight band will not sit flush, and you need to know that before the wax is cut.

Band fit is the single most common thing people wish they had thought about earlier, and it is one of the very few ring decisions that is genuinely difficult to fix afterwards. The emerald cut deserves its own treatment because it is the one shape where the default expectation is usually right, and being usually right is how people stop checking.

Why the shape helps

Curved stones are the problem. An oval, a pear, a marquise all present a curve to the band, and a straight edge meeting a curve touches at exactly one point and leaves a gap either side. That gap is what a contoured band exists to fill.

An emerald cut presents a straight edge to a straight edge. The stone's outline is a rectangle with cropped corners, so the boundary the band has to meet is flat and parallel to the band itself. Geometrically, this is the easy case.

Geometrically. The stone is not the only thing in the way.

The straight-edge test

Ask for the side elevation โ€” the CAD view from the side of the ring, not from above. Then lay a ruler, a card edge or any straight object flat against the shank, running along where a wedding band would sit.

  • No daylight. A plain straight band will sit flush. You are free to buy any band you like, now or in twenty years.
  • A sliver of daylight under the stone. A straight band will sit against it but with a visible line of light beneath the head. Some people are entirely happy with this; some find it is all they can see. Decide now, not later.
  • An obvious gap. You need a contour, an open band, or a different head design. Change the head now while it is still a drawing.

The reason this has to happen before casting is that every variable involved โ€” setting height, gallery depth, shoulder rise โ€” is fixed at the wax stage. Afterwards your only options are a different band or a rebuild.

What breaks the fit

Two of those are worth noticing because they run against expectation: a bezel and an east-west setting both tend to make banding easier rather than harder.

If we could add one question to every engagement ring order in this trade it would be: what band is going next to this, and when. Most people answer "we will worry about that later", and later is the expensive moment. The head is cast, the stone is set, and now a straight band we could have accommodated for nothing needs a contour cut to match a shape that already exists.

The concession is ours to make. We do not put profile height on our product pages, and profile height is the number that decides this. So the straight-edge test is not something you can run from a listing โ€” you have to ask us for the side elevation, and we will send it. It costs nothing at the drawing stage and it is the cheapest decision in the whole order.

The four options when it does not fit

1. A contoured band. Cut to follow the profile of your specific ring. It fits perfectly and it is committed to that ring for good โ€” it will look odd worn alone. Contour bands covers when you actually need one.

2. An open or split band. A straight band with a gap where the head sits. It reads as a design choice rather than an accommodation, and on a rectangular stone the clean break suits the architecture.

3. Wear it on the other side. A straight band worn below the engagement ring rather than above it often clears the head entirely. Costs nothing and keeps every future option open.

4. Accept the gap. A sliver of daylight under a raised head is a look, not a fault. Plenty of very good rings have it.

What we would not recommend by default is soldering the two together to force the fit. It solves the alignment permanently and it also permanently ends resizing, separate wearing and independent repair. The trade-offs are set out in should you solder your rings together?

Matching the band to a step cut

Beyond fit, there is the question of what looks right next to a rectangle. Two things we would say from the bench.

Straight beats curved. An emerald cut is a set of parallel lines, and a band with a clean straight edge continues that language. Anything with a wave or a twist argues with it.

Baguettes over rounds, if you want stones in the band. Round pavรฉ next to a step cut sets up a sparkle the centre stone cannot match, and the band ends up livelier than the diamond. A baguette or channel-set band speaks the same language.

What to specify

  1. Side elevation of the engagement ring, before casting.
  2. Profile height in millimetres. See the profile height guide.
  3. Straight-edge test run on that elevation, with the answer in writing.
  4. Band width matched to the engagement ring's shank, not chosen independently.
  5. Same metal and same alloy, so the two wear at the same rate.
  6. If stones in the band: baguettes or channel set rather than round pavรฉ.
  7. If a contour is needed, it should be cut to your actual ring and not a generic profile.
