Round Brilliant Lab Grown Diamond Rings: What to Check Before You Buy

The one shape with a real cut grade β€” which makes it the easiest to buy well and the easiest to overpay for.

Short answer

For a round brilliant lab grown diamond, check five things in this order: cut grade first (round is the only shape that gets one), then eye-clean clarity rather than a high grade on paper, then colour only as far as your setting metal demands, then the lab that issued the report, then the price against current market rather than a β€œcompare at” figure. Cut is where the beauty is; the other four are where the money leaks.

Round brilliants are the most bought and the most standardised diamond shape in the world. That is good news: it is the only shape where an independent lab will tell you, in one word, whether the stone was cut well. It is also why round is the shape where an overpriced stone hides most easily β€” everything looks the same on a listing page.

1. Cut grade, before anything else

The round brilliant carries 57 facets, or 58 with a culet, and its proportions are standardised enough that GIA, IGI and GCAL all issue a formal cut grade for it. No fancy shape gets one. Oval, pear, marquise, emerald, cushion, radiant β€” none of them.

That gives you something no other shape offers: a single word that tells you whether the stone will actually perform. Take Excellent or Ideal. The saving on Very Good is small and it is the one grade that visibly changes how the stone looks in ordinary light.

2. Eye-clean beats a high clarity grade

Clarity grades are assigned under 10Γ— magnification. You will wear the ring at arm’s length. Those are different questions.

VS1 and VS2 are almost always eye-clean in a round. So is much of SI1. Paying up to VVS or IF on a lab grown stone buys a line on a certificate, not a visible difference β€” and with lab grown specifically, the premium for those grades has become harder to justify as production quality has risen.

3. Colour is a setting decision, not a quality decision

A warm metal warms the stone sitting in it. In 14K or 18K yellow gold, a G or H reads perfectly white because your eye is comparing it to the metal around it. Put that same stone in platinum and the comparison changes.

So decide the metal first, then buy colour to suit it. Buying D colour and then setting it in yellow gold is money spent on a difference you have just cancelled out.

4. Which lab issued the report β€” this changed in 2025

In October 2025 GIA stopped issuing D–Z colour and FL–I3 clarity grades for lab grown diamonds. It now issues a Laboratory-Grown Diamond Quality Assessment that reads β€œPremium” or β€œStandard” instead, or neither if the stone clears neither band. Reports issued before that date keep their letter grades.

The practical consequence for you: if you want the granular numbers to compare stones against each other, you want an IGI report, or GCAL. IGI grades most lab grown production and still gives full 4C detail. A pre-October-2025 GIA report is also fine and still readable the old way.

The honest one about price. Lab grown diamond prices fell steeply between 2020 and 2024 and have since flattened close to production cost. A well-cut certified 1Β ct round now sits roughly between the high hundreds and about $1,500 at a fairly priced seller. The same specification still sells for 40–60% more at retailers who never repriced. So a β€œ60% off” badge on a lab grown stone usually means the original price was fiction. Compare the actual number against the market, never against a struck-through one.

5. What the report cannot tell you

Two stones with identical reports can look different. A grading report describes measurable properties; it does not describe how a stone behaves in the light of your kitchen.

Ask for video under ordinary indoor light, not studio lighting. Studio setups flatter every stone equally, which is exactly why they are used. If a seller will only show you stills, that is information.

If you are weighing the two: a lab grown diamond is chemically and optically diamond, and it is graded on the same scales. Moissanite is silicon carbide β€” a different mineral with roughly 2.4 times diamond’s dispersion, sold by millimetre and diamond equivalent weight rather than true carat, at a fraction of the price. Neither has meaningful resale value. Choose on what you want to own, not on what you hope to recover.

Why should I buy just under a whole carat?

Prices step up at round numbers because demand clusters there. A 0.90Β ct round is about 6.2Β mm across and a 1.00Β ct is about 6.5Β mm β€” a difference of roughly a third of a millimetre that nobody will ever notice on a hand, at a noticeably lower price.
