Engagement photos put the ring front and centre for years to come. A little preparation — the ring, the rest of your jewelry and your hands — makes a visible difference.

Short answer

Before an engagement photoshoot, clean the ring a day or two ahead so the stone is at its brightest, keep other jewelry simple so the ring stays the focus, match metals to the ring, and prepare your hands with neat nails in a soft neutral colour. Ask your photographer for a few close-up ring shots in soft, directional light.

Your engagement photos will be shared, framed and looked back on. The ring appears in many of them, often in close-up — which means any smudge, clashing metal or distracting accessory shows too.

Two small timing tips make a big difference. Clean the ring a day or two ahead rather than on the morning — a soak in warm soapy water and a soft brush from underneath removes the film that dulls a stone, and it gives you time to notice if anything looks loose. And don't apply hand cream in the hour before the shoot: it leaves a film on the underside of the stone within minutes, which is exactly what makes a ring look flat in close-ups. A thin, fast-absorbing lotion the night before is plenty.

Posing the ring
