Classic Oval Moissanite Solitaire: Why Customers Choose It, and How to Choose Yours
One stone, four prongs, a plain band. The simplest ring we make, and one of the most reordered β with a few details worth checking before you choose a size.

Short answer: Our Classic Oval Moissanite Solitaire is a single oval moissanite held by four prongs on a plain band, made to order in 925 silver or solid 10K, 14K or 18K gold, in seven sizes from 2 carats (9 Γ 7 mm) to 5 carats (12 Γ 10 mm). Both customers who ordered it so far chose 10K yellow gold. Check the millimetres: the ovalβs shape changes between sizes.
There is a reason the plain solitaire never goes out of style. It shows the stone and nothing else, it takes a straight wedding band flush beside it, and every later change β a bigger stone, a new head, a band added years on β is simple. This oval version has been ordered twice, both times in 10K yellow gold, at 2 and 2.5 carats.
Here is what we would tell anyone choosing it.
Seven sizes, and they are not the same shape
Moissanite is sold by millimetres with a diamond-equivalent carat figure, because it is about 15% lighter than diamond. On this ring the length-to-width ratio moves around between sizes, and that changes the look more than the carat figure does.
| Size option | Stone | Length : width | Shape on the hand |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2 carat | 9 Γ 7 mm | 1.29 | Soft, full oval |
| 2.5 carat | 10 Γ 8 mm | 1.25 | Full, close to round |
| 3 carat | 12 Γ 8 mm | 1.50 | Long and slim |
| 3.5 carat | 12 Γ 8.5 mm | 1.41 | Classic elongated |
| 4 carat | 12.5 Γ 8.5 mm | 1.47 | Elongated |
| 4.5 carat | 12.75 Γ 8.5 mm | 1.50 | Long and slim |
| 5 carat | 12 Γ 10 mm | 1.20 | Broad, nearly round |
Two things stand out. The 5 carat option is shorter than the 4.5 carat and much wider, so it reads as a broad, almost round oval rather than a bigger version of the slim one. And the 3 and 4.5 carat sizes are the slimmest. If you love a particular oval you have seen, match its ratio first and then choose the size.
Where the four prongs should sit
An oval has two ends that come close to a point, and points are where stones chip. Moissanite is Mohs 9.25 and very tough in everyday use, but a hard knock on an unprotected tip can still nick it. On a four-prong oval, ask where the prongs are placed. Prongs at the north, south, east and west positions cover both ends directly; prongs placed on the diagonals show more of the outline but leave the ends more open. Neither is wrong β it is a choice between protection and look, and it is easy to see on the CAD preview.
Why a plain solitaire ages so well
A solitaire has four settings to look after. A halo ring has dozens. Over twenty years that difference is real: fewer bench checks, fewer places for wear to start. A plain band also sits straight and flush against a wedding band, so you never need a curved or notched band to fit around it. And if you want a larger stone later, a solitaireβs head can be rebuilt without touching the band.
From the workshop
Both customers who ordered this ring chose 10K yellow gold. It is a practical choice that rarely gets credit. 10K is about 42% gold, so it is harder than 14K or 18K and resists dents and scratches better on a ring worn every day; it also costs less. Yellow gold reflects warm light into the stone, which softens moissaniteβs coloured flashes β a calmer look many people prefer. The one thing to know is that 10K yellow is a paler yellow than 14K or 18K. If you add a wedding band later, order it in the same karat, because 10K beside 18K shows a visible colour difference.
Before you order: a short checklist
- Choose the shape first (ratio), then the size, using the table above.
- Cut a paper oval at your chosen millimetres and hold it on the finger.
- Decide on prong placement: north-south-east-west for protection, diagonal for outline.
- Pick the karat with the wedding band in mind, and keep both the same.
- Ask for the band thickness at the base; 1.8 mm or more is right for daily wear.

Frequently asked questions
What sizes does the classic oval moissanite solitaire come in?
Seven: 2 carat (9 Γ 7 mm), 2.5 carat (10 Γ 8 mm), 3 carat (12 Γ 8 mm), 3.5 carat (12 Γ 8.5 mm), 4 carat (12.5 Γ 8.5 mm), 4.5 carat (12.75 Γ 8.5 mm) and 5 carat (12 Γ 10 mm).
Is a four-prong setting secure enough for an oval?
Yes, for everyday wear, provided the prongs are checked every couple of years. For the most protection, ask for prongs at the north, south, east and west positions so both ends of the oval are covered.
Is 10K gold good for an engagement ring?
Yes. 10K is harder and more scratch-resistant than 14K or 18K and costs less. Its yellow is paler, so match any wedding band to the same karat.
Will a straight wedding band sit flush with this ring?
Generally yes β a plain solitaire is the style most likely to take a straight band flush. Confirm it on the side view of the CAD preview before production.
Why does the 5 carat look rounder than the 4.5 carat?
The 5 carat stone is 12 Γ 10 mm, a ratio of 1.20, while the 4.5 carat is 12.75 Γ 8.5 mm, a ratio of 1.50. The larger stone is wider and slightly shorter, so it reads broader and rounder.
