Eight Mistakes on a Big Marquise
The shape that gives you the most size for your money is also the one with the most ways to get it wrong. Nearly every regret is on this list.

Short answer
The eight are: no V-prongs, never measuring the finger span, ignoring the ratio, judging the stone from stills, expecting a hidden halo to add size, choosing a shank under 1.8mm, leaving the wedding band until later, and not knowing that a large moissanite shows far more fire than a small one.
A marquise converts weight into visible size better than any other shape. That is why people choose it, and it is a genuine advantage โ at one carat it runs about 10mm long where a round is 6.5mm.
It also has two points, the strongest bow-tie of any cut, the narrowest acceptable proportion window, and a wedding band problem that no other shape matches. At four carats every one of those is magnified. Here is where it goes wrong.
1. No V-prongs on the points
A point is the thinnest material in any cut, and hardness does not protect it โ Mohs describes scratch resistance, not impact resistance. A V-prong caps the tip from two sides so a knock hits gold rather than stone. On a marquise both ends need one.
Fix: specify V-prongs by name. And book a bench check every two years โ the V-prong is designed to wear, and what fails on marquise rings is almost always a V-prong caught late.
2. Not measuring the finger span
At four carats a marquise runs 15โ16mm. On many hands that exceeds the flat span between the knuckle joints, so the stone sits over the joints rather than between them and the ring rocks slightly as the finger bends. It is invisible in photographs and obvious to the wearer.
Fix: measure that span before choosing the shape above about three carats. If it is short, either drop the weight, or set the stone east-west so the length runs across the finger.
3. Ignoring the ratio
The length-to-width ratio has a narrower acceptable window on a marquise than on any other shape: roughly 1.90โ2.00 is classic, and outside 1.75โ2.15 the shape stops reading correctly. It is printed on no report.
Fix: divide length by width from the measurements line. Default to 1.90โ2.00 when ordering unseen. And check separately that both points sit on the long axis โ a marquise that leans, leans permanently, because the head is built to that stone.
4. Judging the stone from still photographs
A lightbox surrounds a stone with light from every direction and removes the dark object overhead. That hides the bow-tie on every elongated brilliant, and the marquise typically has the strongest one of any cut.
Fix: ask for a handheld video in an ordinary room. Watch whether the dark band breaks up as the stone tilts or sits there as a solid grey mass.
5. Expecting a hidden halo to add size
This is the commonest halo mistake and it is a naming problem. A hidden halo sits below the girdle facing outward; it adds a line of light visible only from the side. It adds nothing to face-up size and it does not mask a bow-tie. A full halo does both.
Fix: say the goal rather than the setting name. And if you do want a hidden halo, ask for the low-profile build โ the standard one adds 1โ2mm of height, which on a pointed stone lengthens the lever arm acting on the tips.
6. A shank chosen because it photographs well
Width is cosmetic. Thickness is structural, and almost no listing states it. A four-carat head is roughly twice the mass of a two-carat one on the same geometry, distributed unevenly along one axis, and under about 1.8mm the shank goes out of round within a few years. Once it deforms, the setting above stops sitting square.
Fix: 2mm at the base under a stone of three carats or more, plus a euro shank so a heavy head does not turn. 14K rather than 18K helps too, but thickness matters more than karat.
7. Leaving the wedding band until later
A marquise contour has to clear a point and a V-prong within a fraction of a millimetre, which makes it the hardest band fit in jewellery. Drawn from the ring's own CAD file it nests exactly; modelled afterwards from a finished object it fits well rather than exactly, and on this shape the difference shows.
Fix: run the straight-edge test on the CAD side elevation, order both together, and ask for extra thickness either side of the contour notch.
8. Not knowing that a big moissanite is a loud moissanite
Moissanite disperses light at 0.104 against diamond's 0.044, and dispersion needs depth to show. Below about 3mm the two are hard to tell apart; a 4ct marquise is 15โ16mm long. Fire scales with size, so a large moissanite is a less convincing diamond lookalike than a small one.
Fix: decide whether that is what you want. If you want scale without rainbow, a step cut in warm 14K gold delivers it. If you want the fire, order it deliberately โ and never let anyone describe moissanite as a diamond.

Read the middle column. Almost everything expensive to get wrong on a marquise is decided before casting and cannot be changed afterwards. Profile height, gallery architecture and the ring's overall geometry are fixed the moment metal is poured. Stones swap, heads replace, shanks rebuild โ but the shape of the ring is permanent.
Which is why we keep saying the same unglamorous thing: CAD approval is the only step in the process that really matters, and most people approve from a top-down render where three of those four specifications are invisible. Ask for the side elevation with profile height in millimetres. Thirty seconds, and it is the difference between a ring you keep and a ring you fix.
