How We Work

Made-to-Order vs Ready-to-Ship

The same ring, bought two different ways β€” and what each one costs you.

Two jewellers can show you what looks like the same ring at what looks like the same price, and be selling something structurally different. One has the ring in a drawer. The other will make it once you have paid for it.

Neither model is better in the abstract. They are better at different things, and the mistake is choosing without knowing which one you are buying from. If the term itself is new, What Is Made-to-Order Jewelry? covers the basics.

The trade in one table

Made-to-order Ready-to-ship
Speed Weeks Days
Choice Metal, karat, carat, size all yours Whatever was made
Range on offer Wide β€” nothing has to be pre-funded Narrow β€” limited to what sells fastest
Changing your mind Hard once production starts Easier β€” it can go back to stock
Waste Nothing made that nobody wanted Unsold stock gets discounted or melted

The honest summary: made-to-order buys you choice and costs you flexibility. Ready-to-ship buys you flexibility and costs you choice.

Why made-to-order shops have bigger catalogues

This surprises people. A workshop that holds no stock can list hundreds of designs across every metal and carat, because listing a design costs nothing until somebody orders it. A shop that stocks physical inventory has to fund every piece in advance, so it stocks the safe middle of the market β€” the popular shapes, the popular sizes, the popular metals.

Which means if you want a shape that is not round or oval, a metal that is not white gold, or a carat that is not the standard one, the made-to-order shop is very often the only one that will have it at all.

Where made-to-order genuinely costs you

You cannot handle it first. There is no tray and no showroom, because the piece does not exist. Working around that is a skill β€” see Buying Fine Jewelry You Can't Try On First.

Size decisions are final earlier. The band is cast at your size rather than adjusted to it, so the measurement matters more than it would on a stock piece.

Returns work differently. A stock ring goes back on a shelf. A ring cast to your specification does not, and most workshops' terms reflect that. Read the returns terms before ordering, not after β€” Understanding Jewelry Returns & Warranties explains what to look for.

You need runway. If a date is fixed, the whole plan has to run backwards from it β€” Ordering Jewelry for a Fixed Date.

Which one suits your situation

Buy made-to-order when you know what you want, you have several weeks, and the specification matters β€” a particular shape, a particular metal, a carat that is not the default one.

Buy ready-to-ship when the date is close, when you are unsure and want the option to send it back easily, or when you are buying a gift and the size is a genuine guess.

And notice that the second list is mostly about uncertainty. If you can remove the uncertainty β€” confirm the size, decide the metal, start early β€” the reasons to prefer stock largely disappear.

FAQs

Is made-to-order jewelry better quality than stock jewelry?

Not automatically. What it reliably gives you is specification β€” your metal, karat, carat and size rather than whatever was produced in bulk. Quality depends on the workshop either way.

Why does a made-to-order shop list more designs?

Because nothing has to be funded before it sells. A shop holding physical stock has to pay for every piece in advance, so it stocks the safest, most popular options only.

Can I return a made-to-order ring?

Terms vary by workshop and are usually stricter than for stock items, because the piece was cast to your specification and cannot be resold. Check the returns policy before ordering.

Which should I choose if my date is close?

Ready-to-ship, or a made-to-order piece with no sizing step such as earrings or a pendant, shipped express.
