Most jewelry timelines are written as a single number: ships in X days. That number tells you almost nothing useful, because it hides where the time actually goes and gives you no way to judge whether your order is on track.

Here is the honest version. A made-to-order piece does not exist when you buy it. It is cast, set, finished and inspected afterwards — which is exactly why the stone, metal and size are yours to choose, and exactly why it does not leave the same afternoon. The timeline in two halves

Every made-to-order delivery date is the sum of two independent numbers. Confusing them is the single most common reason people misjudge when a piece will arrive.

Stage by stage

1. Order confirmation and specification lock. Your size, metal, karat and stone choice are recorded and checked against the design. This is the last comfortable moment to change anything, which is why it is worth reading your confirmation email properly rather than filing it.

2. Casting. The setting is cast in your chosen metal at your chosen size. This is the step that makes resizing a genuine job later rather than a quick alteration — the band is not stretched to fit you, it is created to fit you.

3. Stone setting. The centre stone and any accents are set by hand. Larger centre stones, halos and pavé bands all take longer than a plain solitaire, simply because there are more stones and tighter tolerances.

5. Quality check. Stone security, symmetry, finish and size are verified before anything is packed. A piece that fails here goes back a stage rather than going out — which is the point of the check, and occasionally the reason an order takes a day or two longer than the average.

6. Dispatch and transit. The parcel is packed, insured and handed to the carrier, and tracking becomes available.

Where timelines actually slip

In practice, delays almost never come from the workshop being slow. They come from three places:

An unconfirmed detail. If a size or metal choice needs clarifying, production cannot start until you reply. This is the most common cause of a slipped date and the easiest to avoid — watch for an email in the first day or two after ordering.

Customs and carrier handling. International parcels can sit for a day or two at a border. Nothing about the piece is wrong when this happens, and tracking will show it.

What this means if you have a deadline

Add the two halves together, then add a buffer of at least a week on top. If the date is fixed — a wedding, an anniversary, a flight — order earlier than feels necessary and choose express. A ring that arrives three weeks early is a non-event. A ring that arrives two days late is a problem no amount of quality fixes.
