"Dainty", "not too flashy", "like the photo but nicer" — all completely reasonable things to say, and none of them can be cast in metal. Here is how to translate them.

How to use reference images properly

Sending a photograph is genuinely useful, but only if you say what about it you like. A workshop looking at your reference sees twenty design decisions and has no way to know which one you meant.

So instead of "something like this", write: "This, but with a plain band instead of pavé, and a lower setting." Three sentences of that kind are worth more than ten images.

One thing to be aware of: reputable workshops will not copy another brand's protected design outright. Using an image to communicate a style — a bezel, a three-stone layout, a particular band profile — is normal and fine. Asking for an exact replica of a named designer's ring is not, and a workshop that agrees to it is telling you something about how it operates.

What to leave to the workshop

Some things are better delegated, because the answer depends on manufacturing constraints you cannot see from a photograph.

Prong count and placement. Determined by the stone's shape and how it needs protecting — 4-prong vs 6-prong explains the trade-off, but the setter should have the final say.

Metal thickness at the shank. Too thin and it deforms. A workshop knows the minimum for your chosen width and karat.

Ask these three questions before confirming

"What will the total height be off the finger?" This is what determines whether a ring catches on things, and almost nobody asks it.

"Can this be resized later, and by how much?" Full eternity bands and some pavé settings effectively cannot be. Better to know now.

"What is the last date I can change anything?" There is always one, and it is earlier than people assume — the production timeline shows where it falls.

Put the final spec in one message

After the back and forth, write the agreed specification out as a single list and ask for confirmation that it is correct. Not because anyone is untrustworthy, but because a decision agreed across fourteen messages is genuinely easy to misread — by either side.
