What to Do the Day Your Ring Arrives
Ten minutes of checks that make every later conversation simple.
Most people open the box, put the ring on, and wear it out that evening. Perfectly reasonable — and it quietly closes the window in which every possible problem is easy to resolve.
The first hour is the only moment when a piece is provably as it left the workshop. Ten minutes spent there is worth more than any amount of arguing later.
Before you put it on
Open it over a soft surface. A towel or a bed, not a sink or a hard floor. This sounds fussy until the first time something small bounces.
Photograph it in daylight. Several angles, before wearing. Timestamped photographs of an unworn piece settle almost any question that could arise in the following weeks, and take under a minute.
Check it against your order confirmation. Metal, karat, stone shape, carat, size, and the design itself. This is the single most valuable check and the one people skip because they assume it is right.
The three physical checks

Keep the packaging for a week
The box, the outer parcel and the paperwork. If anything needs to go back, original packaging makes it straightforward and its absence makes it awkward. A week of a box sitting in a cupboard costs you nothing.
If something looks wrong
Stop wearing it and report it with the photographs. That order matters. A piece that continues to be worn after a suspected fault becomes progressively harder to distinguish from one that picked up damage in normal use — which is a problem for you, not for anyone else.

In the first month
Wear it normally and watch the fit. Rings settle into a routine. If it spins constantly or has to be forced, that is worth knowing early rather than at six months.
Do the rattle test again at four weeks. A setting that loosens quickly is telling you something; one that is still silent has passed the only test that matters.
Arrange insurance if the piece warrants it. Cover usually needs the purchase documentation, which is easiest to supply while it is still to hand.
