The heart is the most difficult of all the fancy shapes to cut well, because the two lobes must be perfectly symmetrical, the cleft between them has to be sharp and centred, and the point at the base needs to align exactly with that cleft. Get any of it wrong and the eye notices immediately. Set here with a small round diamond on each side, the shape is given room to read clearly rather than being crowded by accents. Every diamond is a laboratory grown diamond, identical in carbon structure, hardness and brilliance to a mined diamond, graded E colour and VVS2 clarity. Frequently asked questions

What should I look for in a heart cut diamond

Symmetry above everything. The two lobes should match each other in size and roundness, the cleft between them should be sharp and sit exactly on the centre line, and the point at the bottom should line up with that cleft. A heart that is even slightly lopsided looks wrong from across a room, which is why fewer cutters attempt the shape and why a well cut one is worth seeking out.

Is a lab grown diamond a real diamond

Yes. A lab grown diamond is real diamond. It has the same carbon crystal structure, the same hardness of 10 on the Mohs scale, the same refractive index and the same fire and brilliance as a mined diamond. The only difference is that it was grown in a controlled laboratory over a few weeks instead of underground over billions of years. No jeweller can tell the difference by eye, only specialist equipment reading growth patterns can separate the two.

Is the point of a heart cut fragile

The point is the most vulnerable part of the stone, as it is on a pear or a marquise, which is why this setting protects it with a V prong that wraps around the tip from both sides. Worn normally the stone is durable. As with any diamond ring, take it off for gym work, gardening and heavy lifting.

What carat weight suits a heart cut

Larger is genuinely better with this shape. Below about one carat the lobes and cleft become hard to read and a heart can be mistaken for a round or a pear at a glance. At the two carat minimum offered here the outline is unmistakable, and at four or five carats it is striking.

Does this ring come with a certificate

Yes. Every ring ships with a free IGI certificate for the centre stone. IGI is the International Gemological Institute, one of the largest independent diamond grading laboratories in the world. The certificate confirms the carat weight, the E colour grade, the VVS2 clarity grade and the laboratory grown origin. There is no extra charge for the certificate.

Which way up is a heart cut worn

Point down toward the wrist, cleft up toward the fingernail, is by far the most common. Worn that way the widest part of the stone sits across the finger and the shape reads correctly to anyone looking at your hand.

What does E colour VVS2 actually mean

E colour is the second highest grade on the diamond colour scale and sits inside the colourless range, so the diamond looks bright white with no warm or yellow tint. VVS2 means very very slightly included, the second highest clarity tier. Any inclusions are so small that a trained grader needs 10x magnification to find them and they are completely invisible to the naked eye.

A lab grown diamond gives you a materially identical stone for a fraction of the price of a mined equivalent, and that matters more on a heart than on almost any other shape, because hearts need size to read properly and a large mined heart of good symmetry is both rare and expensive. Growing a diamond also avoids the open pit excavation, land disruption and water use that mining a comparable stone requires.
