Moissanite 101
Buying Jewellery for a Wedding Party
Several people, one budget, and sizes you mostly do not know โ which narrows the answer considerably.

Short answer
Choose categories that do not need sizing โ studs, pendants and fine bracelets โ and keep the stones small, because 3โ4ย mm is exactly where moissanite and diamond are indistinguishable and the saving is largest across several pieces. Buy solid metal rather than plated, even if that means going smaller: a plated gift wears through and looks it. And order 10โ12 weeks out, because made-to-order pieces need bench time and any one of them may need adjusting.
Buying for a wedding party is a different problem from buying one piece: it is a batch purchase with a fixed date, several recipients, and almost no sizing information. Those constraints do most of the choosing for you.
This is the one buying situation where the small-stone rule does all the work at once. Moissanite disperses light more than diamond โ 0.104 against 0.044 โ and that is what makes a large stone recognisable. But dispersion needs depth to develop, and a 3โ4ย mm stone has barely two millimetres of pavilion. At that size it never builds, so the piece reads as clean white sparkle exactly as a small diamond does. Meanwhile you are buying four or six of them, so whatever the per-stone saving is, it multiplies. The result: the pieces most suited to a wedding party โ small studs, a fine pendant, a delicate bracelet โ are precisely the pieces where the visual difference is smallest and the price difference largest. That is not a compromise dressed up; it is the inverse of a large solitaire, where the difference in fire is most visible and the saving applies to one stone. Buy small, buy solid, and put the saving into the metal rather than the stone.
Which categories work
| Piece | Sizing risk | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Stud earrings | None | 3โ4 mm; check pierced ears first |
| Pendant on a chain | None at 45 cm | Soldered jump ring, lobster clasp |
| Fine bracelet | Low | Add an extender chain |
| Small hoops | None | Check the closure type |
| Rings | High | Avoid for a group gift |
The last row is worth being firm about. A ring for someone whose size you do not know is a resize waiting to happen, and a resize adds three to four weeks plus a return leg โ which is impossible against a fixed wedding date. Studs and a 45ย cm pendant fit essentially everybody.
Solid metal, even if it means smaller
The decision that separates a gift still worn in five years from one that is not. A plated or gold-filled piece wears through at the contact points and cannot be restored, so it has a short life by design.
The rule for reading a listing: if the word โgoldโ needs a preposition โ over, filled, plated, vermeil โ it is not solid. A number with no letters after it (14K, 585, 750) means solid; GP, GF, HGE, RGP and โ925โ on a gold-coloured piece mean layered.
If the budget will not stretch to solid gold across several people, solid 925 silver is the honest downgrade โ and for earrings and pendants it performs perfectly well, since neither takes the grip pressure that makes silver a poor choice in a daily ring. Ask for bezel settings in silver, since the hardness gap makes prongs the failure point.
The details that decide whether they keep it
- Earring backs. Butterfly backs are why single earrings go missing โ the friction loosens with every removal. Locking or La Pousette backs cost very little and are the best upgrade available.
- Soldered jump rings on every pendant. An unsoldered one can spread under tension, which is how pendants are lost with the chain still around the neck.
- Lobster clasps, not spring rings, on chains and bracelets.
- Solid rather than hollow chain. Nothing external shows which; ask for the gram weight.
- Ask about pierced ears before ordering studs for anyone. It is a short conversation and it avoids an awkward one.
Matching or varied
Both work, and they solve different problems. Identical pieces look deliberate in photographs and are simplest to order. The same category in varied designs โ all pendants, different shapes โ suits a group with genuinely different taste, and costs no more if the stones and metal are consistent.
One practical note if the pieces will be worn on the day: keep them small enough not to compete with what the couple are wearing, and check they work with the necklines involved. A 45ย cm chain sits just below the collarbone and suits most, while 40ย cm sits higher for a high neckline.
Timing and ordering
- Order 10โ12 weeks before the date. Made-to-order pieces need bench time plus transit, and with several pieces the chance that one needs adjusting is not small.
- Ask for production and transit days separately. A checkout estimate is transit only and omits the bench stage entirely.
- Ship to one address, yours, rather than to several people โ simpler, cheaper, and it avoids customs surprises landing on a guest.
- Choose landed pricing with duties prepaid if it is crossing a border, so nothing is owed on delivery.
- Check everything the day it arrives against the written specification, and report anything wrong the same day.
One honest word on budget
Group gifts drift upward easily, because each individual piece feels modest. Set the total first and divide, rather than choosing a per-person figure and multiplying โ and remember the metal is where a giftโs longevity lives.
A smaller solid piece with good hardware beats a larger plated one every time, and it is the version still being worn when the photographs are old.

Frequently asked questions
What jewellery works as a gift when you do not know sizes?
Stud earrings and a pendant on a 45ย cm chain fit essentially everybody, and a fine bracelet with an extender chain is close behind. Avoid rings for a group gift โ a resize adds three to four weeks plus a return leg, which is impossible against a fixed date.
Is moissanite a good choice for wedding party gifts?
Particularly so. At the 3โ4ย mm sizes these pieces use, dispersion never develops, so it reads as clean white sparkle exactly as a small diamond does โ while the saving multiplies across several pieces. Small stones are where the visual difference is smallest and the price difference largest.
Is plated gold acceptable for a gift?
It wears through at contact points and cannot be restored, so it has a short life by design. Go smaller in solid metal instead โ and if the budget will not stretch to gold, solid 925 silver is the honest downgrade, performing well for earrings and pendants with bezel settings.
How far ahead should wedding party gifts be ordered?
Ten to twelve weeks. Made-to-order pieces need bench time plus transit, and with several pieces the chance that one needs adjusting is not small. Ask for production and transit days separately, and ship everything to one address rather than to several people.
