Short answer
Two principles cover most of it. Let the neckline decide the necklace โ a high or embellished neckline usually wants none at all, and earrings carry the look instead. And order at least ten to twelve weeks out, because the real risk is not production but resizing, which needs a second round trip. Practically: keep the engagement ring the focus, choose earrings that suit the hairstyle, and test every clasp days before rather than on the morning.
Wedding jewellery gets chosen late, in a rush, alongside a hundred other decisions. A few things are worth settling early because they cannot be fixed quickly, and a few are much simpler than they are usually made to sound.
Let the neckline decide

The general rule: whatever the dress is already doing, the jewellery should not repeat. A heavily detailed bodice is the necklace.
Order ten to twelve weeks out, and the reason is the resize, not the making. People plan around production time โ a made-to-order piece takes a week or so at the bench, and a few weeks in transit if it is coming from abroad. That maths looks comfortable at six weeks. What it leaves no room for is the ring or bracelet arriving a half size out, which needs a return leg, bench time, and a second delivery โ and on an international order, a second customs clearance as well. That sequence turns a comfortable timeline into an anxious one. Build in the resize you probably will not need, and if the date is close, say so at the point of enquiry rather than at checkout: it changes what a workshop will recommend.
Earrings: the practical constraints
- Hair up means earrings are fully visible and can be larger. Hair down mutes them, so scale accordingly.
- Weight matters over a long day. Heavy drops that feel fine in a shop are uncomfortable by hour eight and cause the earring to tilt forward.
- Check they clear the veil and any comb before the day. Long drops and hair accessories tangle.
- Moissanite is at its best here. At 3โ6ย mm there is too little depth for the extra dispersion to build, so the saving comes with no visible compromise โ and losing an earring at a wedding is a real possibility.
The engagement ring on the day

The week-before checks

- Press each stone with a fingernail. Any movement means a bench visit that week.
- Replace tired earring backs. Butterfly backs that slide on without resistance are why single earrings go missing. New backs cost very little.
- Try everything on together, with the dress and the hair as they will be. Pieces that work individually can crowd each other.
- Give someone a small pouch for anything removed during the day. This is how earrings get lost โ taken off, put on a table.

Studs and fine bracelets travel best across different tastes and different outfits, where necklaces have to work with whatever each person is wearing.
