Alternatives in a Wedding Band
The strongest case for a diamond alternative anywhere in jewellery, and the piece where construction matters far more than the stones.

Short answer
Band stones run 1.5β2.5mm, well below the size at which moissanite's extra fire becomes visible, so an alternative here is undetectable and the saving multiplies across twenty to thirty-five stones. What actually decides the band is coverage β choose three-quarter, not full eternity, because it looks identical on the hand and stays resizable.
If there is one place in fine jewellery where a diamond alternative is straightforwardly the better-reasoned purchase, it is a stone-set wedding band. The reasons are physical rather than a matter of taste.
Why the difference disappears here
Moissanite disperses light at 0.104 against diamond's 0.044, and that dispersion is the material's only visual tell. But it needs depth to show β light has to travel far enough through the stone for the colours to separate visibly.
Below roughly 3mm there is barely two millimetres of pavilion and the effect never appears. Wedding band stones sit at 1.5β2.5mm. They are comfortably inside that range, which is why a moissanite eternity band and a diamond one look the same across a room, across a table, and on a hand.
Meanwhile the saving multiplies. A full eternity band carries twenty to thirty-five stones; a three-quarter version fifteen to twenty-five. The per-stone difference is small and the total is not.
Coverage is the decision that matters

Three-quarter is the quiet winner and almost nobody is steered toward it. The bottom of a shank faces your palm; nobody sees it, including you. But leaving it plain keeps the ring resizable for life, puts solid metal where the ring takes most of its wear, and leaves a surface for engraving.
Fingers change size β with weather, with age, with pregnancy, with medication. A full eternity band cannot be resized without being remade, and that is a permanent constraint accepted for a benefit nobody can see.
Where the cost actually is
People assume they are paying for the stones. On a set band they are mostly paying for labour.
Each stone is a separate sequence at the bench: drill a hole, cut a seat into the metal, place the stone, raise beads of metal over its edge to hold it. Thirty stones is thirty of those sequences, by hand, under magnification. Changing the stone material moves the price far less than people expect β which is another reason the alternative argument here is about sense rather than about being cheap.
The free quality check: look along the stone row from the side in daylight. Stones sitting at slightly different heights, or a row that wanders off the centre line, means seats cut at speed. A level row is the clearest evidence the bench took its time.

Setting stones removes metal from a band, so a 1.8mm set shank is not as strong as a 1.8mm plain one β there is measurably less material, concentrated exactly where the seats are cut. The number to ask for is therefore not "1.8mm" but 1.8mm at the base after the seats are cut. Those are different figures and only one is structural.
The rule we give every set-band customer, and the one that saves the most money: if you lose a stone, stop wearing the ring and have the whole row checked rather than that single gap refilled. Beads are often shared between neighbouring stones, and every bead in that section has taken the same years of wear. Refilling one gap in a weakened row buys a few months.
The wear problem between two rings
Once a wedding band sits against an engagement ring, the two are in contact for every one of the roughly five to seven thousand days they are worn.
If the band is stone-set and the engagement ring's shank is plain, the stones abrade the metal. Diamond at Mohs 10, or moissanite at 9.25, against gold at roughly 2.8 is not a fair contest, and a worn track appears on the plain shank over a decade. Matching stone-set to stone-set, or plain to plain, is kinder to both.
Two more pairing rules. Match by fineness number, not colour word β 14K and 18K yellow read as different tones side by side, and adjacent rings are where that shows most. And if you mix platinum with gold, expect the gold to wear, because platinum displaces metal rather than losing it.
If the engagement ring has a shaped stone
Most elongated centre stones need a contoured band, because the stone occupies the space a straight band wants. That is a separate decision from the stones in the band, and it has one hard rule: a contour is cut to one specific ring's profile, so it should be drawn from that ring's own CAD file. Ordered later and modelled from a finished object, the fit is good rather than exact.
Run the straight-edge test before assuming either way: hold a ruler flat against the side of the engagement ring and look for daylight under the stone.
