Affordable Diamond Alternatives

Six stones compared on the only two questions that matter: how it looks now, and how it looks in five years.

The short answer: For jewellery that will be worn regularly, only two affordable diamond alternatives hold up over years of wear โ€” moissanite and lab grown diamond. White sapphire is durable but visually dull. Cubic zirconia and white topaz look convincing in the shop and lose their polish within a couple of years of daily wear. Since lab-grown prices fell, the cost gap between the two good options has narrowed sharply, which changes the old advice.

"Affordable diamond alternative" covers a wide range of stones, and the marketing around them tends to compare only the two flattering measurements: hardness and sparkle. Both are misleading on their own. Hardness tells you about scratching but nothing about chipping, and sparkle in a jewellery display tells you very little about how a stone behaves in ordinary indoor light after two years of hand cream, dust and washing up.

Why cubic zirconia dies and moissanite does not

This is the part almost no comparison explains, and it is the reason so many people conclude that "fake stones go cloudy."

Cubic zirconia measures 8.5 on the Mohs scale, which sounds robust. But ordinary household dust contains a large proportion of quartz, which measures 7. Every time a hand is wiped, a ring is put in a pocket, or a piece is set down on a surface, microscopic quartz particles drag across the facet edges. A stone at 8.5 is close enough to 7 that those edges gradually round over. Sharp facet edges are what produce crisp flashes of light; once they soften, the stone scatters light instead of returning it, and you perceive that as cloudiness.

Moissanite sits at 9.25 and lab grown diamond at 10. The Mohs scale is not linear โ€” the gap between 8.5 and 9.25 is far larger than the numbers suggest. At those levels quartz dust does essentially nothing, which is why a moissanite ring worn every day for a decade still looks the way it did when it arrived.

The test to apply to any "diamond alternative": not "how bright is it under the shop lights" but "what does everyday dust do to its facet edges over five years?" That single question separates the stones worth setting in gold from the stones that belong in costume jewellery.

Why white sapphire disappoints people who chose it for durability

White sapphire is genuinely hard at Mohs 9, and it will not abrade. The problem is optical, not physical. Two properties determine how lively a colourless stone looks: refractive index, which governs how much light bends back to your eye, and dispersion, which governs how much of that light splits into colours. White sapphire is comparatively low on both.

The visible result is a stone that reads glassy and slightly watery rather than brilliant โ€” and because its light return is low, any film of soap, lotion or skin oil on the pavilion dulls it disproportionately. White sapphire needs cleaning far more often than moissanite to look its best. It is a reasonable choice for accent stones and for anyone who actively prefers a soft, understated look; it is not a convincing substitute for the brightness of a diamond.

These are the two options that survive daily wear, so most decisions come down to this pair.

The pricing relationship has changed recently and this is the single most out-of-date piece of advice on the internet. Lab-grown prices fell steeply between 2020 and 2024 and have now flattened near production cost. The gap between moissanite and a comparable lab grown diamond used to be roughly five to one; it is now closer to two to one. If the last time you looked was three or four years ago, look again โ€” a lab grown diamond may now be inside a budget that previously ruled it out.

The mistake that costs more than the stone

At the affordable end of the market, the stone is usually not what fails. The setting is.

A great many inexpensive "diamond alternative" pieces are set in plated base metal โ€” brass or a similar alloy with a thin layer of gold or rhodium on top. That plating wears through at the points of contact within months, exposing the base metal underneath, and there is no economical repair because there is no precious metal to work with. The stone is often still perfect while the ring itself is finished.

Two things to insist on regardless of which stone you choose:

  • A solid precious metal. 925 sterling silver, or solid 10K, 14K or 18K gold โ€” not plated base metal. Everything Mapple Gems makes is one of these. The rule is simple: the closer a piece sits to the end of a limb, the harder the stone needs to be. Rings and bracelets take the impacts; earrings and pendants do not.

A note on honesty and resale

Two things worth being straight about.

First, disclosure. Moissanite is not a diamond and should never be described as one, by a seller or by a wearer who is asked. It is its own material with genuine advantages โ€” more fire, more size for the money, extremely hard. A lab grown diamond is a diamond and should always be disclosed as laboratory-grown. Anyone selling either without saying which it is should be avoided.

Second, resale. Gold has a real and predictable floor by weight and karat. Stones are where value is lost. Because new-stone prices have fallen so far, an older moissanite or lab grown stone competes against cheaper current production, so resale value is limited for both. That is not an argument against buying either โ€” it is an argument for buying something you will actually wear, rather than treating jewellery as an investment.
