Diamond Clarity: VVS1 vs VVS2 and Beyond
What the clarity grades mean, the VVS1 vs VVS2 difference, and where it's smart to save.
Clarity is one of the 4Cs, measuring how free a stone is from tiny internal marks called inclusions. The grades sound technical — here's what they actually mean for your ring.
The clarity scale
| Grade | Meaning |
|---|---|
| FL / IF | Flawless / Internally Flawless — the rarest. |
| VVS1 / VVS2 | Very Very Slightly Included — inclusions extremely hard to see even under 10x magnification. |
| VS1 / VS2 | Very Slightly Included — tiny inclusions, still eye-clean. |
| SI / I | Slightly / Included — may be visible to the eye. |
VVS1 vs VVS2: the difference
Both are exceptionally clean. The only difference is the location and ease of spotting the microscopic inclusions under magnification — VVS1 inclusions are slightly harder for a grader to find than VVS2. To your eye, they look identical.
The smart-value takeaway
Because inclusions in VS and even some SI stones are often invisible without magnification, you can usually choose a lower “eye-clean” grade and put the savings toward size or cut. Cut still matters most — see our 4Cs guide.
Quality moissanite is typically very high clarity by nature, so it stays bright and clean without the premium.
FAQs
Can I see the difference between VVS1 and VVS2?
No — not with the naked eye. The difference is only relevant under magnification.
Do I need a VVS clarity stone?
Usually not — an eye-clean VS or SI stone looks flawless for far less.
