How to Pick a Diamond: The 4Cs Made Simple
Cut, Color, Clarity, Carat — what each one means and where to spend your budget.
Every diamond is graded on four characteristics known as the 4Cs. Understand these and you can pick a beautiful stone with confidence — and know exactly where it's worth spending more.
| The C | What it means |
|---|---|
| Cut | How well it's faceted — the biggest driver of sparkle. Prioritize this. |
| Color | How colorless it is, graded D (colorless) to Z (tinted). |
| Clarity | How free of inclusions. Many are invisible to the naked eye. |
| Carat | Weight — not the same as visible size. |
Where to spend, where to save
Prioritize cut — it makes the biggest difference to brilliance. You can often save on color and clarity by choosing grades that look flawless to the eye but cost less (the “eye-clean” sweet spot).
For a deeper look at each, see Diamond Color Grades and our Carat guide.
The moissanite shortcut
One reason moissanite is so popular: it's naturally high in clarity and color, so there's far less to weigh up. You mostly just pick the cut and size you love. Start with our cut guide.
