Lab Grown Diamond Certification: GIA vs IGI
A grading report is your proof of quality. Here's what GIA and IGI are, and how they differ.
When you buy a diamond, the grading report is what tells you exactly what you're getting. Two names come up most often: GIA and IGI. Both are respected independent labs — here's how to read them and how they compare.
First, the 4Cs
Every report grades the same four things: Cut (how well it's faceted and how much it sparkles), Color (how colorless it is), Clarity (how free of inclusions), and Carat (weight). Together these define quality and price.
GIA vs IGI at a glance
| GIA | IGI | |
|---|---|---|
| Reputation | Widely seen as the gold standard | Highly respected, very common for lab diamonds |
| Lab diamond focus | Grades lab diamonds | Especially popular for lab-grown |
| Turnaround / cost | Often pricier & slower | Typically faster & more affordable |
| Consistency | Extremely consistent grading | Consistent & trusted industry-wide |
The short version: both are credible. GIA is often considered the most rigorous and is sometimes used as a benchmark, while IGI is extremely common for lab grown diamonds and usually more affordable to obtain. What matters most is that a stone is graded by a reputable independent lab — not no lab at all.
Tip: compare like with like. A grade from one lab should be read against that same lab's scale, since standards can differ slightly between labs.
What about moissanite?
Moissanite isn't graded on the diamond 4Cs in the same way, since it's a different stone — but quality moissanite is consistently high in clarity and color by nature. At Mapple Gems we use premium, conflict-free moissanite so the quality is dependable in every ring.
FAQs
Is GIA or IGI better?
Both are reputable. GIA is often called the gold standard; IGI is very widely used for lab diamonds and usually more affordable. Either is trustworthy.
Do lab grown diamonds come with certificates?
Yes — reputable lab diamonds are graded just like mined ones, often with a laser inscription matching the report.
Should I avoid uncertified stones?
For diamonds, a report from a respected lab is strongly recommended so you know exactly what you're paying for.
